Battery or alternator?
Battery or alternator?
Tried to start my g37 one morning and the engine wasn't starting. I jump started it and let it idle for a few hours to let it charge. I then drove it and turned it off for a few minutes to run an errand and it was able to start back up but sounded like it barely did. Later that night I turned it off for a few hours and tried to start it and it would not start again. The past few days l've been able to jump it to get it started and drive it just fine with no radio or electronic problems, the only problem was starting it. Sounds like my battery but i had just replaced it brand new in january of this year and when i took my car to autozone they tested the alternator and said that was the issue. I just don't understand how my car would be driving fine and longer than 30 minutes at a time if it was my alternator.
Well, if the alternator is putting out at least 12.61 volts, then it won't trip the PCM for 'low charging'. Also, if the battery has been drained few times and recharged, then it's performance dropped a lot so it will hold charge (volts) but not have enough AMPS to runs things, especially starting which requires few hundred AMPS.
Alternators on these cars do fail, faster on those that have leaking power steering pump and/or hose fittings.
So if you pair a half decent battery with a barely charging alternator, then you'll drive as long as the engine is ON..

We never have had that many bad alternator threads here. Just a few. I don't know why but the Murano forum I'm on is about half bad alternator threads (other half are bad CVT). The 2nd gen Murano that still used the VQ35 but added "smart" charging to the alternator would act up all sorts of ways once the alternator wasn't charging properly but it would be intermittent and go away after an engine off/on cycle. Then the 3rd gen Murano added electric power steering and that made the situation even worse so that steering inputs would put the car into limp mode. So many crazy bad charging system stories in that car. But practically none here in the G forum. I've got 305k miles on my original alternator. I'm sure it'll crap out next week now though....
