Re: Visiting Hawaii...

We will be visiting the Aloha state next week. First to Oahu, then to Maui.

Would appreciate some tips from you fellow G-drivers on what to do and see in Waikiki. Suggestions for restaurants (where locals eat), places to visit, cool bars and clubs, and even some recommendations on "gentlemen clubs" are welcome! ;-)

Thanks from Vancouver, Canada.

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

Glad to hear about your visit. 1st off, t-shirt/polo, jeans, and bermuda shorts are acceptable casual business wear here. A list of places: Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor (USS Arizona/Battleship Missouri), Pineapple Fields, Whale watching (winter is whale watching season).

What interests you? History, sightseeing, beaches, shoppings?

I'm going to Maui next week also. If you've never been to Maui, a must do is a downhill bike ride from the top of the volvano crater down to the beach...unforgettable experience. 38 miles down and you only have to pedal for some 800 feet of it. There's also a nice Hard Rock cafe in Maui that I enjoyed before. If you can afford a helicopter ride over either island, they are well worth it. They take you into interior parts to see amazing waterfalls and such that you can only get to 1-2 days hiking otherwise.

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

Thanks for the prompt reply.

We have been to both Oahu and Maui before, and have done most of your suggestions. What we are looking for are things that a tourist book would NOT have. Some things that only the locals know about would be great!

Also, we will be in a condo in Waikiki, and would like to cook a few meals ourselves. Any suggestions on places to pickup fresh produce and other groceries. Is there a Costco on Oahu?

Many Thanks...

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

Sorry, I thought you said first "time" to Oahu. Anyway, yes, there are 3 Costco stores on Oahu, 1 on Maui. If you want to check out the track here, www.hawaiiracewaypark.com. There's trolling (but I don't think its trolling season). There's a Dave & Busters entertainment/arcade/food for adults. Zanzabar is a popular nightclub. Restaurants: John Dominis, Morton's, Hoku's at the Kahala Mandarin
I just drew a blank...Any specific things you want to do?

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

i been there in waikiki last oct. stay at hilton hawaiian village and the time before that at waikiki beach tower, which it a condo.best place to pick up some FRESH produce, fruits and seafoods for your own cooking will be chinatown.they have an openmarket there.be sure to get there early because they close right after noon i think.while you're there, try some exotic "homemake style" at the food court.one thing i like there is the thai's papaya salad.make sure you have couples of ice cold water handy.he he,smoke will come out of your ears.also if you go to north shore, you might see local people selling fresh coconut.they chop the top off and give you a straw.bring a metal spoon,so you don't waste the coconut meat inside...hope you have a good time there, like i always do...

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

Hi,

I thought I'd add on my two cents. Hawai'i is all about the food and eating. My friend who lives in San Diego now, often brings people home with him on vacation. The funny thing is that all he has lined up for them to do is go to all the good eating places.

You Must try Waiola Shave-ice. My favorite is the ice cream bowl, haupia flavor with condensed milk. If you like mango or lychee, my wife swears theirs' is the best because they use real ingredients.

Another must is Boots and Kimo's banana macadamia nut pancakes. It's a small place in Kailua, always crowded. It's a little pricey for breakfast, but still well worth the effort. People will drive across the island for those.

For hawaiian food, 'Ono Hawaiian Foods on Kapahulu is good, Kapahulu Poi Factory across the street is cheaper, but they run out of food just after lunch, Ruger Market has more selection, Farmer's Market has all the exotic stuff like raw crab, na'au, all kinds of poke, and Peoples' Cafe near downtown or Leong's in Kalihi are local favorites.

Also, everyone goes to Zippy's late night (open 24hrs), Panda Cuisine for the best dim sum 'till 3am, or Taiyo Noodle House, I think the best ramen or curry, also open 'till 3am.

I'm sure everyone on this thread could add on their favorites and infinitely increase this list. One local saying is Kanak Attack or eat 'till you sleep, also known as Polynesian Paralysis. Enjoy.

Aloha

Re: Visiting Hawaii...

Just got back a couple of weeks. Hawai'i No Ka Oi!!! (I hope I spelled that correctly - Hawaii is the Best!!!

Even saw a G35 Sedan Cop car parked in front of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. It looked absolutely fantastic!

I'll post a picture when I figure how!

Cheers.
