Got to deal with Recon again...

I understand there is the recon and a safety inspection required to get my registration. I have dealt with it before…was too much of a hassle with my car so I skated out on it. (Florida car...do WHATEVER you want to it...Great state!) What I am trying to find out is once I complete the recon and get my safety inspection, is the safety inspection a yearly requirement? Will they tell you to get another recon if they see something changed?

If I change my exhaust after the recon or put tint etc...I have heard you are required to get another recon. How do they know that the previous recon didn’t include what is on the car now? (Like if I changed from a Nismo exhaust to a Greddy TT exhaust? Does it list the specific type or just say modified exhaust?

Anyone still using an out of state plate? I heard you could. What’s the process?

Thanks,

safety inspection is yearly. legally, u are suppose to update ur recon with each new mod so that ur recon is legit. however, when i got my recon for my neon, and then did another mod...i went to get it updated. the guy over there said "oh, u sure like update'em, cuz if u no pass we gotta strip off ur sticker. most guys jus chance'em without updating it". I was kinda shocked at that response...nonetheless i still passed. anyway, i'd just go to some beatdown, shabby place for safety inspection after u get ur recon (if u change something out post recon). some places jus look to see if you have the sticker...others jus wanna make sure u get the paper/sticker (they won't even read the recon paper and inspect/match the mods)...sometimes.

I believe you have to renew your recon every 2 years if you don't do any other mods like beangrower stated.

it's 2 years for new vehicles purchased from a dealer only. After that it's only good for one year.

ahhh never mind read that last post wrong.

What is the recon? Will they give you that as a ticket for ANY aftermarket mods, like putting on exhaust? That seems crazy.

^^yup thats recon. Anything and I mean anything done to the car must have recon. Oh and if you get recon make sure your tint isn't darker then 35% or have any stickers on the car. Even stupid stuff like having a bobble head on your dash will be an obstruction of view and they won't pass you.

Ya, it’s ridiculous. Its a money making scheme for the state. The recon stated that I needed an new alignment, amber side markers, front bumper impact foam (under TS-1), remove tint (was 9%), and remove vinyl from tails...I think that’s all. So if you have an exhaust like a Greddy TT and it says racing only on the bottom of it...im guessing the safety inspection will fail ya? And will a test pipe also fail ya? I read that they only care about how loud the exhaust is...that true?

test pipe is a no go, it's actually a federal requirement....tree hugging stuff. you can get a hefty fine for that one.

yeah the drama/post and it's an instant flame forum. If you need the amber markers I got a spare set that I can lend. All I ask is that you take me for a spin.

Ridiculous, there are so many laws in hawaii to just make more money for the state that just make it harder on the people who live here.

I purchased a set of the ambers from the dealership on island a while back and will have to see if I can find them....(car has been in storage for 14 months..its sooo sad). If not I will hit u up..thx

As for you getting a ride...you don’t want to do that cause it will end up costing you 10K when you convince yourself you need a TT setup too after being plastered to the seat... hehe

Ya, I have that thread benchmarked. Found it when I was searching "recon" on this forum...I was just being redundant hoping someone could interject more info ...you know, help spark more conversation here in our Hawaii section...
