Re: safety check recs?
Steve...honestly I cant say that I know of anyone. Though the cost of the illegal tint issue, has changed to something like $500 flat. Believe that this is more than the old way of per window.
Re: safety check recs?
Just to give you a heads up on the tint. Before if you got tagged for each window, you could go to court and the judge would throw out most of the tags and you would just pay for one window.
Now with the new law you get a flat fine of $500.00 for your tint.
Also about the safety checks, most places won't take the chance of losing their license for giving out tags for vehicles without recons. I have been told by some stations that they lost their license when it was traced back to them for passing an illegal vehicles.
Just a little to think about....

Re: safety check recs?
I would either avoid illegal tint or take your chances.....
I know of someone who removes his illegal tint before every safety inspection and then replaces it......
Also, what's ironic over here on the BI is my safety inspec guy says that a few of the local police come by his place to try to get their illegal tint passed....he kindly declines.....
But, with a new car, one is safe from safety inspections for 2 years right? The only risk is if an officer of the law whips out his/her tint checker thingy from their trunk.

Re: safety check recs?
Its not that they drop names its the spot checks and investigations. If there is alot of questionable vehicles getting safety checks from a station then a investigation is started.
I have heard that they go as far as sitting around the station and seeing what vehicles drive off with checks that should have not been issued.
I know there are some places that do it but like everything else it the chance you take.

In case you're interested, this is what I found from Kalihicop on <a href="http://www.forumshawaii.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=104219&postdays=0&postorder=asc&st art=15">Forumshawaii.net</a>
This is what I found on the third reading prior to it passing.
Honorable Robert Bunda
President of the Senate
Twenty-Second State Legislature
Regular Session of 2004
State of Hawaii
Sir:
Your Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs, to which was referred H.B. No. 1987, H.D. 1, S.D. 1, entitled:
"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLES,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to increase the fines for violation of the motor vehicle sun screening devices law.
This measure fines the owner between $250 and $500 and the installer between $500 and $1,000 for each separate offense. The installer is also required to reinstall, free of charge, a sun protective device which complies with the law or to reimburse the owner for the cost of reinstallation.
This measure also makes a business entity as the installer subject to the penalty; provides that a receipt from the installer is prima facie evidence of the identity of the installer; and requires installers to issue to the vehicle owner a certificate of compliance with the law.
Testimony in support of this measure was received from the Honolulu Police Department, Hawaii Business League, T&T Tinting Specialists, and one individual.
Your Committee finds that the current penalty of a fine between $50 and $250 is too low to serve as a significant deterrence. This measure would increase the fines to the owner and fine the installer. Testimony indicated that there are numerous installers who knowingly contravene the legal limits of tinting in flagrant and intentional violation of the law. This bill will help resolve this problem.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of H.B. No. 1987, H.D. 1, S.D. 1, and recommends that it pass Third Reading.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs,

Re: safety check recs?
IF you find "a friend" to do the safety check, make sure he's a GOOD friend. Speaking from 1st hand info (cop friend AND service station owner friend), passing illegal safety checks will get you another ticket on top of the $500. (G35Five_O correct me if I'm wrong, please)
You could get a ticket for fraudulent safety inspection. Then, whoever gave you the safety check gets his personal inspection license revoked, AND the establishment that he works at gets a $10,000 fine, Plus their license suspended.
Hope you'll understand if not many people are willing to drop names. But, there are a few service stations that don't even check for tint. They'll just pass it as "no tint".
good luck!
