mount and balance tire cost, ripped off?

sup guys, just had my 2 rear tires replaced on my G37 with 275/35/19 Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110's, looks pretty cool and they feel more comfortable than the stock RE050's. I purchased them from tirerack and had them drop shipped to Hawaiian Tire & Auto Center.

They charged me $94.00 to mount and balance the 2 rear tires. I really didn't think twice about it till now, but it seems pretty high for just 2 tires. Price breakdown:

2 mount tires (19" alloys) - $40
2 balance - $40
2 tire disposal fee (air sensor was written in parenthesis below this) - $14

looks like I even got jacked on the tire disposal fee, I thought it was $4 per tire? Hmm lemme know what you guys think. I do have to say that the mechanic who worked on my car was real nice and even said I should have came to them to have my stock tire patched. I ran over a screw that was very close to the sidewall, and took it to Gemini and they said they couldn't patch it because of the sidewall, which they obviously lied about because the Hawaiian tire guy showed me that the screw actually didn't even touch the sidewall. Unfortunately the tire blew anyway so there was no use in keeping it, but still, Hawaiian Tire earned my trust and respect for showing me this. I just dunno at this point whether I got ripped off or not on the tire install

some places like lex brodies charge about 20 bucks or so to mount and balance. tire disposal fee is like 3-5 bucks. something like that.. but then again, i went to them for my stock rims. not sure if i would take it there with my 19's.. as far as i know, alot of places do end up scratching rim(s) when they mount tires on them..

I just mount my own. I'd balance them too if I had access to the machine.

OP - if the tire blew and the screw wasn't in the sidewall I would be extremely concerned and would think this is a manufacturing defect........or the Gemini guy was right and the tire should not have been patched. Seeing as how the tire blew out I'm going to say it never should have been patched.

As far as the cost, $80 for the dismount/mount/balance seems pretty high since this should work out to about 1 hour of time per tire.

Some places will charge more if you did NOT purchase your tires from them. We do that here at American Tire Company. But for the G35 drivers I do NOT charge extra. 19" tires we charge $22 or $27 if you did not buy tires from us. Disposal is $6.50. If the tire has TPMS we recommend a service kit to replace the o ring and valve cap & core. Over time, these corrode. The part and labor for that is about $30. If any of you have any questions or want prices please don't hesitate to call me...Ola at American Tire 841-4742. We have serviced a few of the G's from this forum....THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR BUSINESS. Merry Christmas!!!

hey guys, thanks for the responses. i noticed when i was cleaning one of my rear wheels yesterday that the rim did get a little damaged from tire mounting... at least the damage wasn't there before, and i know it wasn't curb rash, since the outer part of the wheel wasn't damaged. is this a risk that we always have to take when getting tires mounted on bigger (ie 19") wheels?

yeah i did purchase the tires from tirerack, but hawaiian tire is a recommended installer, so i mean still, it sucks if they charged more because of this.

i guess i will go to another place when my front tires crap out, which is in about 3000 miles or so, i'm guessing.

anyone know a good place to get my car aligned? I figure hawaiian tire would charge me over $200 for an alignment, considering how much their mount and balance charges were...!

Well Technically a tire cant be patched if its close to the sidewall because the new way to patch tires is a patch plug system that wears down with the life of the tire, Not the old cord rammed into ur tire. The patch plug repair requires about 2'' diameter on flat inner tire to seal good. Also if u drove on it flat for a little the sidewall is comprimised already and most places wont repair it.
