good places to look for used cars on oahu
looking for a used 04' 6 spd g35 and wanted to know where are some good places to look for used vehicles? already know of islandpreviews, speedhawaii forum, i'll probably purchase from a private seller to not have to deal with tax payments. any info is appreciated thx.
this is gonna sound kinda lame, but just get the word out. my friend's gf's brother bought an '04 G coupe 6MT for something like $29K, and it had something like 5k miles and was prolly about 1/2 year old when he bought it. the guy couldn't afford the monthlies and the car would've gotten repossessed, so he was pretty desperate to get rid of it. just ask around, someone's bound to know someone who's selling.
also, you might be careful when buying a used high-performance car, tho. chances are pretty good the guy (or girl) ripped it, like even before the breakin (which is why i buy new). ask to see the receipts for maintenance & repairs, and if no more then take some $ off. (if you don't believe that people actually do this to their G's, then obviously you've never been in an "RC testdrive"! lol!)
and i know this is gonna sound lame, but do a mileage allowance, something like this:
when trying to figure out how much a car has depreciated, esp. if it's almost new, do these calcs to figure out what the car is "worth." i actually did this to a dealer and it worked - except the car had too many mechanical unknowns and ended up buying new anyway.
Used Car "Depreciation" Example
Mos/Yrs since owner acquired it: 16 mos.
Actual Mileage: 32,785
Annualized Mileage at 12K/yr (what the car should've had at 12k/yr) after 16 mos: 20,000
Differential: 12,785
Depreciation cost (if this car were a lease and were capped at 12k/yr, this represents what you would pay at the overage per mile rate), at $.25/mi: $3,196.25
Asking price: $27,900
Now, assuming that this is the "blue book" value for a car with 20k miles, then you'd subtract the "overage depreciation" of $3,196.25 for a "value" of $24,703.75.
i actually did this to a dealer and they budged on the mileage part (not for the "as-is, no warranty" part, which is why i didn't buy). if you have web access (like on your phone) then you can get a really accurate quote from edmunds.com, etc. right then and there. but even if you get the "blue book," you may be able to use this to get them to lower the price.
good luck!
