2008 IS 500 Coupe

Here are some photos of the upcoming IS 500 Coupe rumored to have the same 5.0L V8 engine that's being developed for the forthcoming Supra.

Photos of the Actual Test Mule

This is the Toyota Crown Royal Japanese Market sedan that's been shortened to mimic the eventual coupe's size and proportions. This car has been spotted running Germany's Nurburgring racetrack.

I don't know about you, but if they make the coupe look like a chopped 4-door sedan, that'll be the end of it. The only company that made a chopped 4-door into a chopped 2 door look good was the outgoing E46 3-series coupe. I don't know why Lexus just won't go for a whole new body style like the G35 coupe vs. the sedan...

Rumored output is around 400hp. It remains to be seen if Toyota has enough sense to stick a real 6-speed manual in the car or at the very least a manu-matic that won't automatically shift for you if you leave it in a certain gear for too long.

ok, then maybe they'll call it the IC 500 for "international coupe." lol.

btw, the test mule is on a totally different japan-mkt-only platform (the crown) which is, i'm guessing, more on par w/ the benz cl500 in terms of dimensions. they did the testing on that car because the engine bay's big enough to hold a V8 (according to the toyota source). the body is just for show. the 2nd pic is obviously photoshopped; the IS looks good as a sedan but atrocious as a coupe if it ever comes out looking like that.

i remember my friend telling me in '97 that toyota chose the name Lexus to be short for Luxury Export to the United States. in '89, Lexus was indeed only sold in the U.S. but today are sold almost everywhere else toyotas are sold including the home japan market.
