Plenum Spacer and ECU

First let me introduce myself. My name is Eric and I'm from Atanta GA. My girlfriend is the one that has the G35. 04 Red, coupe, 6speed, OEM front lip, brembo, loaded. I recently installed a z tube and threw in a K&N filter. I am trying to think of things to do that won't cost an arm and a leg. I've seen the spacers before when looking on different sites but i see on here that its a must as far as mods go. i also notice that alot of people are talking about MREV. Now im a Honda man myself and i dont know much about Nissan so all of this is new.I am apart of a local site called importlounge.com. It's an Atlanta based site. I'm trying to learn as much as i can though. I guess my questions are: what exactly is MREV? Which spacer is best size wise and company wise. Since im a Honda man, skunk2 is supposed to be good but from what i see on here they aren't. Finally is there anyway that one could get the 04 ECU reflashed with the 05 program on it. 280<298 obviously. Ive seen the ECU that most of you guys have but it seems a bit pricey. I didn't know if this would be an easier way to go. Thanks in advance for any help. Eric

Welcome,
On G35 intake manifold is like a shell. MREV2 is a modified lower part of that shell. If you go with MREV2 you don’t need spacer IMHO, otherwise get 5/16” or 1/2" spacer. See motordyneengineering.com

ECUs can be re-flashed ~$600+, but I guess not with 05 program, there are some engine differences between REVUP and prior version of engines (no variable exhaust valves). There are also few piggyback ECUs that can be added instead of ECU re-flash. All of them, including re-flash might void warranty. Good luck

That narrows it down.

The extra horspower rating in the 05's comes from the RevUp engine and not the ECU.

Intake, MRev, and high flow cats will create a noticable difference.

I meant she has the G35 not me.
I wasnt aware that there was a motor difference. Ive seen RevUp on here but i didnt know what it meant. I just figured the new motor has some timing and fuel delivery differences that made the upgrade. Thanks

The lower plenum was different - shorter runners meant higher peak hp but less torque. Variable exhaust timing is the other main change in the 298 hp motor.

The MREV2 is the way to go now (IMHO) rather than spacer or some combo...

First off welcome... MRev is taking the Intake Manifold of a 287hp motor and machining it for more top end. How? First off there are a 2 types of G35s VQ motor:

2005-2006 5AT AND 2003-2004 6MT & 5AT - 280HP motor

2005-2006 6MT - 298HP motor
- Beffed up Rods and Rod Bolts (revs up to 7,000RPM)
- Variable Valves on the Exhaust cam...
- New ECU (different ECU from 287 model)
- Different intake manifold, shorter runners designed for top end

mRev is taking the lower manifold (part housing the runners) and adding a 5/16 spacer to it.. this design is for the 298hp motor ONLY. why? the longer runners gain ALOT of mid-range Torque and HP but causes the motor to loose out on the top 500rpm. Longer runners increases air velocity but limits the motor at top end. Kinda like you breathing through a big straw.. its fine and perfect when you're not doing anything or just walking. now try breathing through a toilet paper roll.. kinda hard to do.. now run while breathing through the big straw and you'll probably pass out lol but the toilet paper roll is perfect..

to fix the HP loss Motordyne (Company making the mRev & spacers) added a 5/16th spacer to increase the area of the plenum. This allowed more useable air in the system and softened the blow but did not completely eliminate it. mRev2 uses the same hardware but with a machined lower plenum.. they shaved off areas to increase a little more area to almost making a flat curve between 6,600-7,000RPM.

mRev on a 287HP car pretty much means.. instead of adding a 1/2" or 5/16" spacer to increase plenum volume.. they shave/machine parts of the lower manifold to gain more area. I'm not sure on prices or backorders but I think getting the 1/2" spacer will be just as good as mRev. (someone correct me if the gains are better - only real advantage i would think mRev has over 1/2" is that sealth look running the stock engine cover).

As for the best spacer.. Motordyne Engineering hands down. they use the best quality parts, reasonable pricing, and includes a cooling kit.. the cooling kit will let you rest your bear hands on the plenum after a few hard runs. Skunk2 does make good products but their version of the G35 spacer.. is eh..

for a reflash.. IMO if your only going to lightly mod it just get a Greddy U so you have the ability to set Timing and A&F

Hey guys, I myself just recently bought a 2006 g35 6mt like 3 weeks ago, I recently bought a AEM CAI that still needs to go in, but just wondering what other mods i can do to make have more torque and pwr. Im also hearing about doing an MREV , so im just tryin to get a feel of what are good mods to buy to make my car faster and more power. thanks!!

Hey there. Congrats on the new car.

Since you are new, you probably won't know this fact. The AEM CAI will cause you to lose torque....not gain it. I've been there and done that.

I highly recommend that you keep your stock box and get a z-tube for it and a K&N air filter. Then, hook up with Tony from Motordyne and get the best plenum spacer for your car. After that, get some Crawford High-Flow cats.

This is how I did it. Hope this helps!
