Hollowing out the Cats?

There is a post on my350z from a guy who hollowed out his cats. What do you think about hollowing out the cats? Does anyone know how to do it? How do you get them off and on without tripping the CEL? Anyone done this yet to their G?

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

You Just Take out the cats and Punch out all the Honey Comb material with a Stick or something, Might be harder to do with the VQ Cat since it's angled. I wouldn't do it because of $1,500 EPA Fine Per Cat..........

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

How much gain could one honestly expect from even doing such a thing? I'm not that concerned about a fine if there were decent gains. I just can't justify hurting the environment unless I'm getting atleast 15rwhp out of it. :P

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

I did it to my old 89 Probe Gt turbo and I felt a difference but my cat was already bad so it didn't matter to me. I had to either buy a new one to get rid of that egg smell or hollow it out. But anyway, don't forget you won't pass inspection so you'll have to take it to a friend's shop who will pass you. That's what I had to do and it becomes a pain in the ***.

I have read that these cars burn very clean, so they would pass the test. The advantage over test pipes would then be that you would pass the visual inspection....right? Some say to expect about the same gains as test pipes, which is about 12 whp. What do you think?

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

You would still have some unburned gas come out the tail pipe instead of being trapped in the cat.......

So you think it would still fail the test?

I don't know you might pass, But if you don't you will be placed on the Gross polluter list. that means Smog checks EVERY Year and at Test only or Referee Stations ONLY......

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

I have done this and I wouldn't recommend this method...
Let's see it took me total of 8 hours and I broke a sensor...
It sound real great and I can feel the power, but it isn't worth
all the trouble... I'll rather buy after market cats... and having to remove and reinstall rather than hollowing it out... Trust me it isn't like other cars I hollowed out there is honey comb aluminum look **** and it will take long time..... and also there's something else other than that... I can't really explained because it was all crushed, but it isn't worth it...

Re: Hollowing out the Cats?

I bought a pair used from my350 and gutted just the secondary cats, I will have them installed when I put my Borla headers and Apexi SAFCII on next week. Cant wait...
I know what you mean about it being a PITA I drilled the hell out of it then pulled one tiny piece off at a time till it was all out.
