The ram air ducting from the grill over to the airbox stays on the car.
is that safe?

I ran this setup up until I got my spacer. After installing the spacer and with the duct still removed, the VQ felt too soft down low for my tastes. Above 3500rpms it felt great and sounded damn sexy. I went to the track back in November and ran some upper 14.3s/14.4s at nearly 100mph with just the spacer and no duct, but my slips were indicating that my car was fractionally slower in the 330' confirming that the lowend power was impacted. I put the duct back on and the lowend feels a quite a bit better, though the sound and snappiness of the throttle isn't as fun above 4500rpms. Overall, the driveability seems to have improved. My theroy is with the open airbox and a spacer, there is too much flow through the airbox/MAF/intake manifold which causes a erratic MAF readings and air turbulence through the intake tract during lower rpm, especially at full throttle. I've seen this same issue with my old Maxima and LT1 Z28.
