Just recently about 2 weeks ago i got my Borla installed. The morning after i started my car I noticed this strange metallic clapping sound....kinda like what the metal flap that some big rigs have on top of their exhaust. Have any of you guys with the Borla experienced anything like this? What could it be? I think i will take my car to get looked at by the shop that did the install...(incase something is loose) but if that uncovers nothing then i will take it to my dealer...although im afraid they may not want to check it once they find out its an after market system...but i still dont know just how strict my dealer is about mods..ill soon find out. All comments (especially from borla owners) will be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah..I forgot to mention...once the car has been running for a minute or two, the noise dies down...hmmm

I've got no clapping sound here bro. Maybe something is banging underneath and quietens down after warmup.
I guess it's possible something is caught up under there too.
You need to get it up on a 'drive on' hoist to see what's going on. G/L

Yes, im positive its not that....upon start-up the noise begins once its at its normal idle RPM (no throttle)

You guys should contact Borla HQ at 877-GO-BORLA and dial 0 for customer service. They might be able to help you...

 

here's the fix, at least on my car. I installed the borla dual exhaust today. When I reved the engine and the rpms came back down you could hear a sound best described as a flutter.

We put it back up on the lift and reved again with it on the lift. The sound was coming from the second set of pipes closest to the cats. These two pipes connect to each other in the middle of the pipe.

The fix was to loosen the clamp then using a huge pair of pliers we squeezed the two pipes together at their connection point as much as possible then re-tightened the clamp. This also helped all the other links fit together better. Make sure you tightened up the other clamps a little after doing this.

No more down rev flutter sound.

I hope I explained it well enough and hope it works for everyone.

You could also check the rear hangers on the muffler section. The hanger itself which goes thru the rubber bushing may be bumping on the bracket that holds the bushing to the vehicle. Just cut of a small portion of the bracket(there is plenty of extra metal) and give it more clearence. This is easier to understand if you are looking at the hangers and brackets under the car.

Alot of the Z guys are having problems with their Borlas. You may want to search on MY350Z.COM Most of those guys had to go back after about 500 miles and have the exhaust readjusted and retightened.

ok...just yesterday i went back to my installer after hearing a HORRIBLE sound from the exhaust, it was hella loud too. it was this very loud metallic vribration (i figured it was nothing grave) turns out that two of the band claps near the end part of the H sections were touching eachother thus making the sound...he had initially tightend the the clamps facing eachother so he just loosened and rotated them a bit and done deal. but i still have that strange sound i mentioned in my first post. My installer noticed it once i brought it to his attention but since it was late and dark ill have to take it back someother day to get it completely checked out.

hmm....i think that same solution ought to do the trick. when i listen to it very closely it seems its coming from that very same section u mentioned..cool, ill print this and take it to my installer, lol.

mndza: you know i though about that too. about the piping coming in contact with the rear sway bar but thats not it (it has good clearance). i confirmed it yesterday when she was on the lift (i should have taken a pic) but some of the pics in my registry ought to help.

so has anyone else had this problem? I just installed the borla last night and it has that sound only when coming off the gas at a little over 2000rpm.

Has anyone welded the H-pipe?

 

Spot welded the whole thing, and fixed the problem I mentioned and it sounds perfect.
