Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

I just saw this post... if this is true, then we are all stupid for waiting for a true dual from borla and stillen. please some of you smart engine heads and car geniussss throw out some ideas on the validity of this. this is really bothering me.

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

Hmmm . . .

Here's the text:

****************
"The system will NOT be a true dual exhaust. This is because of 3 reasons. Please keep in mind our titanium systems are designed for race or race type applications so.... Reason number one is because a single system will perform better than a dual. Reason number 2 is because with our titanium systems we try to eliminate as much weight as possible, so doing the dual system would defeat that purpose to a certain extent. Reason number three is that there would be even more additional cost to the system. On the sound of the system I am not sure how it sounds at this point or how I would describe it. Cost of the system will probably be in the neighborhood of $1000-$1200. Thanks for your interest in Magnaflow Performance. "
****************
The problem is they offer no data to support their statement that it will perform better as a single system. The principle behind performance exhaust systems is that they allow better exhaust flow while increasing scavenging, allowing a cleaner, purer, and more efficient fill of the next fuel-air mixture. If they have some way of accomplishing this goal with a single exhaust system more power to them; I'm sure there are some well-developed single exhaust systems that perform better than duals.

In either case, they can say anything they want. I only want to see the data.

I kinda agree with the guy in theory. If you can do something with 1, why do it with 2?

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

For a start who needs titanium? That's got to be one of the most expensive metals to use. No wonder the expected cost is so high, to save what maybe 20-30 lbs???????
I know you guys are waiting for a system for the Sedan, but my stainless Borla system is all I want. It's lighter by 12 pounds than stock, easy fitment, looks good, sounds even better than stock, yields about 8 hp and 5 ft lbs to the wheels, and costs a reasonable $.
I've never compared single to dual systems either (personally) but have always assumed that 2 pipes were better than 1 (as long as they have a join in them such as an 'H' pipe or an 'X' pipe to equalize pressures and even the flow).
Sound is another big factor (4 me) and I've never heard a single pipe system that I like as much as a dual pipe system. I know there are some on the market and seem to perform well, but for me there's nothing like the sound of dual pipes.
If I still had my Sedan, I'd wait for a reasonably priced stainless true dual system.
But that's me and my opinion. Easy for me to say since I don't have to wait any more and I have a system on my Coupe.
Once these systems come onstream, the testing is done, and pricing is set, it may be easier to decide what is best.

I'm all for using titanium...Not cheap but it's much lighter than stock and, in my opinion, more trick than stainless steel...I like it, and I think it's worth the cost...I can see where many people would disagree with paying for titanium

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

actually 20-30 lbs is a big deal. i think every 15 lbs is equal to 5 hp or somethign like that.

you're thinking of rotational mass, ie. flywheel, lighter rims, etc. It takes much much more "dead weight" to be taken off before any gains will be noticed.

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

I don't know that it is 20 or 30 lbs. but if it was that much, as cryhavoc suggests it won't affect performance in any noticable way. (except at the dragstrip and then only marginally)

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

yes, remember the weight distribution.

luckily and unfortunately the 50 lb stock resonator for the sedan is right in the center. pulling that will raise your center of gravity a little but not much else aside from the weight reduction. my magnaflow resonator weighs about 15 lbs so i removed 35 lbs there and another 10-15 lbs at the muffler. Y-pipe and headers should save about another 20-30 lbs for 60-80 lbs total reduction plus the piping is a little lighter (aluminized). Through yourself on a 20 lb diet, figure in the 10 hp or so you just freed up at the top end and you just cut your 0-1/4 time by about 0.2 seconds.

get some REAL tires and there is a nother 0.2 or 0.3 seconds.

Personally I believe its just the look but Single does give you better sound. Deeper more powerful.

well with the sound, id rather not have it too loud. for cops you know. gonna get some high flows too, so the less noticable the better.

Re: Single better than Dual Exhaust!!!

i personally am putting on a greddy evo thats sitting in my closet as soon as i get my car back from the shop. i chose that exhaust because i actually like the single tip look better (more jdm)... you don't exactly see a lot of highly tuned japanese cars sporting the dual tip look (dual mini tip atleast)... plus, although the greddy is not a full catback, i'm just going to have a good muffler shop do piping with mandrel bending to complete the exhaust. In terms of the y pipes, and cats, I'm going to see how the exhaust flows, and then decide whether to go with test pipes or high flow cats...

as far as the exhaust flow goes, and possibly flowing too much air, i think TS can tune for all that when i get my car chipped.

and as far as my exhaust, i dont know exactly how it will perform compared to the stillen or borla, but it will be lighter, and will be a more straight-through design with less constrictions and mufflers, and bends. (no resonators, unless i add one)

I really liked the sound of my modified resonator midpipe. It's an 18" Allied muffler. The square piece is a brace that stabilizes the midpipe and muffler. Anyone that may be interested in the pipe can PM me.
