Z tube thought

So I'm installing Gords grounding kit ( I'll give some input tomorrow) and the Z tube. I pull out the stock intake and think as I'm looking at it.......
" why did I buy a Z tube when I could have pulled this resonator off, plugged the hole it left, then reinstalled it as essentially the same piece ?"
Am I the only one that had this thought?!
Of course, if anything, I'm completely diggin' the new sound !

You are not the only one,I thought almost the same thing with a twist .
Plug both holes and put back just the cap of the resonator for asthetic purposes, to fill the gap left by it when the Z tube is used.
You are so right, other than the holes they are identical, and to me the "G" tube seems to be made with better care, it seems of higher quality materials .

I recommend you do a precise comparsion between the stock G35 Air Duct and the 350Z Air Duct while you have them both in hand. I found quite a bit of difference when I did it. It helps explain why there was a documented 5.7 hp & 4.2 ft/lbs torque gain on a Coupe.

Re: Z tube thought

the Z duct has bigger diameter than G35's tube... bigger = more air flow...

i think...

Re: Z tube thought

and you wouldn't want those plugs coming out under vacuum and going into your cylinders....pretty high risk for saving money on a part that costs only $70.

Re: Z tube thought

Any hp differences were based on a stock to stock comparison. I'm going to bet that a modified G tube has never been dyno'd. Perhaps the hp difference wouldn't exist ? I realize this would require some extra work and access to a dyno at your leisure but it would be interesting just for curiosity's sake. I definetely agree with the plug coming free into the intake comment although a plastic resin should work. Either way I'm leaving the Z tube in, I'm just throwing out some thoughts.

Also a torque loss down low, perhaps explained by that larger diameter.

Re: Z tube thought

what if you just duct take the holes? would that work? i dont think the duct tape would get sucked down. hmmm. i think im gonna do this then. might be a good money saver.

Re: Z tube thought

how are you going to get to the holes? put the tape down the main duct? that would mean that your taping the inside of the duct and that may not hold up to the negative pressure over time.

Re: Z tube thought

yeah duct tape will not hold, the best way would be to cut off the resonator and perhaps "weld" the opening with another piece of plastic. Now i said "weld" with quotes because it is plastic so the welding or melting process is a little different than your typical gas/arc welding of metals.

i would think that it's not worth the effort (or the risk). just cough up the 30 to 70 bucks.

Re: Z tube thought

If you're concerned with keeping the intake tube looking stock, why not remove the top resonator chamber from the stock tube and glue it to the Z tube?

Re: Z tube thought

i mean to chop off the resonator, then tape around the whole tube. yea sure it'll look ghetto, but honestly, i dont care. think that'll work ok? or maybe just get a piece of plastic and take that onto the tube.
