Not a coupe mid pipe.

Hey guys, I am new to this forum. I drive an 04 6spd sedan. I was looking to make it a bit better sounding. I searched the threads and could not find anyone replacing the mid pipe with an aftermarket resonator/silencer (not sure which one is which).

Here is my concern: does anyone have an idea how would the car sound if I just cut that huge box out and put a pipe and a silencer - like Vibrant or Magnaflow - in its place.
I live in Canada(Toronto) and it seems realy difficult to find a coupe middy.
I can't take this quiet sound anymore. Suggestions....
Thank you, Eugene.

I think that's a good idea. Just go to an exhaust shop, I think Meineke does it, and get a custom pipe and resonator installed. Should be cheap, will give you better flow and sound good too.

look for a used midpipe at local speed shop or slavage yard. much cheaper then buying a resonator and having to cut and weld that in.
plus you can go back to stock any time.

I'm in Canada as well and had to wait about 2 months before locating a used coupe middy. If it's something you can't wait for, I would suggest getting a HKS rear section for now until you can locate a coupe middy locally.

From all that salt, I doubt it would be easy to go back. And I almost gave up looking for a coupe one.
It's my day off today - I will go to a muffler shop and cut it out.

Save the time and the headache and purchase the HKS exhaust - it looks bad **** and sounds even better. By the time you haggle with shipping in, exhabge rates and the hassles involved with dealing with a muffler shop and the issues surrounding drone - just go with the HKS.

My exhaust evolved the same way you are thinking right now.

My buddy does exhaust, so we screwed around with it with a couple configurations.
1st try- remove the behemoth stock resonator, and weld in a straight pipe. Result: Sounds crazy at WOT, but for daily driving it sounded like A$$. Very RASPY!

2nd try- remove straight pipe, and weld in 22" can-type resonator. Result: sounded much more civilized. I drove with it like this for about 6 months, but it needed more...

3rd try- Install HKS rear section. (last night) Result: Goddanm! I love it. I was worried about volume and drone because I don't know how big a difference the aftermarket resonator and the coupe mid-pipe would be. I'm going to keep it this way for a while.

BTW, I have a NISMO intake on as well, so I don't know if the difference will be as noticable, or pleasing as with the stock air-box.

I've got the 05-06 sedan midpipe which utilizes an approximately 60% smaller resonator than the 03-04 midpipe. The sound is amazing. I had the coupe midpipe for about a week, but it just didn't have the right sound which I blame on the fact that the coupe midpipe resonator is designed to work with the coupe crossflow muffler. The sedans don't have crossflow mufflers therefore the sound is much different. Pairing the 05/06 midpipe with the 03/04 muffler gives you a bit deeper and louder sound than the 05/06 sedan muffler which is about 10% larger than the 03/04 sedan muffler. The best thing is there is absolutely no drone which is something the coupe midpipe does have.
