i've noticed in some pictures where people have insulated their intake tube. would this help at all? i just ordered a z-tube and a stillen air box and was contemplating on whether i should insulate mine before i put it in...
Yes it helps insulate heat from the cool intake air. It's only a little thing but every bit helps. The cooler the intake air > the denser the air > hense more power.

ruffrider,
Cooler air = more power. Decided to insulate my Z air duct after identifying the temperature on the underside near the throttle body was 190F. Gsedanman and socalted have also done so. Ted's lace-on insulation should be easier to install than the wrap-on I used. I believe the insulation helps, especially when you live in the middle of the desert like me.

So basically, it's suposed shield out the heat. But some people debate the benefit of this as most people think tha by the time it reaches the plenum, the air will heat up really quickly passing right above the engine. So, the benefits are debatable, but to each his own! :-)
You should try it and let us know if you think there is a difference. :-)

has anyone verified this using autotap or similar scanning tool? I know with autotap you can view live data including Inlet air temperature...and log it. (http://www.autotap.com/autotap_for_windows.html#). Either way it couldn't hurt to insulate it, but I'd like to run autotap on a car with insulation, and one without...just to see the results

Daniel_G,
Isn't the inlet air temperature measured with the air flow at the Mass Air Flow Sensor? Wouldn't the temperature sensor need to be at the throttle body to measure the actual temperature of the air delivered to the engine?
