K&N replacement

Just picked up a K&N filter. Any tips on replacing the stock filter? I am ready to tear into it but I thought I would check with the pros first. Thanks in advance gang

Re: K&N replacement

my 2cents worth - its not worth it, I dont believe you can feel the tiny increase that the KN is puported to deliver - my feeling on the matter is they are better marketers than engineeers. I tried the filter on another car and it was a big job to get it installed, and when done really delivered nothing.

Re: K&N replacement

If you look at the K&N site, they only claim 2-4% HP increase
and upto 10hp increase with a full intake kit -
"Upto" is a lose term and likey in a modern car with tons of electronics the upto is going to be less... so basically very best case 26hp - yea really??? - I would love to know what actual realized gain is, as I said before on my other car it was tons of effort to get it installed for nothing noticable - on the other hand what was I expecting...........

Re: K&N replacement

It is a snap to install if you know how. Not difficult at all.
First take out the plastic "rivits" on the center horizontal air
scoop. Take a small flat head screwdriver blade and slide it under
the rivit head. Twist the screwdriver to pop the head up. Remove
the rivit. There are two holding the center scoop down. Slide the
scoop away. Remove the bolt holding the air box the the bracket.
The air box has a bottom (male) protrusion that actually
sits in a (female receptical). Grab the air box using the power scoop
as a handle and pull straight up. There will be a slight resistance.
When it pops out of its hole, the air box can be moved around,
bending with the bellows. Undo the clamps holding the 2 sides of
the Air Box togeather. Separate the air box and remove the paper
filter. Simply replace it with the new K&N filter. At this point take a
flashlight and look at the bottom of the air box. You will see the
protrusion I refered to earlier. Then look below the air box. You
will see the hole that the protrusion needs to fit back into.
Redo the air box clamps and position the assembled box so that
the protrusion fits into the hole. Push down for it to seat properly.
Tighten the bracket bolt, place the horizontal scoop back into
position. The rivits go back the way they came out. Make sure
the rivit head is poped up and push the rivits back into their holes.
Push the rivit head downward to lock. You are done. The mechanic
at Infiniti showed me how to do this. After you have done it a couple
of times, you can change the filter in less than two minutes.

Re: K&N replacement

If you search on my posts, I did a how-to on installing a K&N. Since then, I've learned that the method cato describes is much easier. Still, if you want some pics to work with, check out my earlier post. You can also use my post if you want to install the K&N and a Z-tube at the same time.

I do think the upgrade is worth it. It's cheap, good for a couple of ponies, and there's an improved sound from the intake. You'll like the mod!

Re: K&N replacement

Be sure the get the Z tube! Your G will sound more like a 350Z
from the inside cabin. I enjoy the 350Z tube all the time, the Stillen
HiFlow AirBox doesn't really kick in untill 4000 rpm. I'm always
enjoying the Z tube.

Re: K&N replacement

Yeh, changing only the air filter probably won't do much. But I really qustion how much even the CAI's actually do.

I would say at a minimum try the Z tube along with the K/N and it probably is of some benefit. Most people on these sites seem to feel the Z tube in worthwhile.

Who ever said changing an air filter is a difficut job should really stay away from working on their car themselves!

Re: K&N replacement

Hey Moderators, why don't you put these air filter change instructions
on the Do it yourself thread as "How to change the air filter". I'm
sure most of us figure we "should be able to do it" until we actually
look at it and say to ourselves "WTF!" That's what I did. I got so
frustrated that I drove down to Infiniti and demanded they show me
how to do such a simple task.

Re: K&N replacement

Gordon,

I was talking about putting my instructions of how to replace
the air filter. Townsley's instructions are for changing the
stock duct plus filter and don't show just how to change
that dang filter. His method is way too much work to simply
change out the filter to a new one.

Re: K&N replacement

Sorry Cato. Situation rectified, and I took the liberty of correcting a couple of typos while there. Yours is very concise! Well done.

G35 Coupe w/ K&N CAI
Re: K&N replacement

If you look back on a post from 12/02 I let K&N use my car to develop the CAI kit, & we also did dyno runs with a stock & drop in OEM fit K & N. The drop in, on the dyno, which I did post the dyno results, yielded an average gain about about 5HP. Not bad for a drop in.

Re: K&N replacement

Oh& BTW, the CAI was totally worth it. Opened my G right up. Can NOT miss the difference. Hell, it even scares old women & small children when I go down the street.... Hahahahahha!!! K & N was conservative on their #'s, my CAI on the Dyno on my car, yielded about 14 to 15 HP gain. FYI..
