What Intake should i go with?

I'm thinking of going with the Z tube and a K & N filter setup but i just want to make sure of one thing....how does this setup compare "powerwise" to a cold air setup, like the injen, nismo, aem, etc. If the numbers arent far off then this is the route i'll go. The reason why i won't just get a typical cold air system is beacuse of a few things: I like the stock look under the hood, 2nd, I dont want the intake too loud(you guys must think i'm crazy), and lastly, i'm happy with the power of the car, but just want that extra "umph" without much effort. What do you all think?

Re: What Intake should i go with?

If you choose to go with the z-tube and K&N, I bought a K&N about 3 weeks ago that I'll sell you for $20.00 plus shipping. I bought it not knowing much and when I started reading about other setups I got interested in the Z-tube with pop charger so now I will have no use for the K&N. This filter will cost you about 45 bucks depending on where you go. Just let me know if you're interested. Or anyone else for that matter.

Go with the NISMO CAI. It's got the bypass valve for the "in case of water" it's not loud at all, sounds very stock as far as i'm concerned... but requires a little bit of effort to put in.
Plus, Shader 7 did an awesome job putting together a step-by-step process on how to install the NISMO CAI

Just my opinion.

Naw man, go w/ the Z tube and JWT Pop Charger... Not just for HP Gaines, but for the SOUND!!!! The Nismo Intake is ok, but it's just like the AEM intake, cheap. If you're gonna go with a CAI go with the Injen, top quality That's my .02, don't punch me

I'd get the Z tube and Pop charger. It seems to make the best overall power, it's close to the stock setup, and it's not all that expensive.

Re: What Intake should i go with?

I prefer the Pop charger setup myself with the Z-tupe. Went with the Stillen over the JWT because of the stock look of the air box. (Stillen is expenive, got it used) If money is a concern and you like the modded look, go with the JWT pop charger.

The Injen and Nismo are essentially the same, except for the bypass valve on the Nismo which potentially offers some protection against hydrolocking. Both make the car sound very agressive from 3800rpm on up. Hit the link in my sig for sound bytes and a video drive-by; it really does sound fantastic.

Re: What Intake should i go with?

See...this is the problem i've been going thru, seems like the majority is the pop charger with the z tube setup, but i dunno why, but i kinda like the way the stock airbox looks. It kinda looks stealthy, where you can't see the actual air element. The only thing i can think of that is similar to this is the Stillen intake that actually supplies a similar looking air box, with the cone filter on the inside.

How much are those anyway? Where can i get one from?
And a last question, is it loud compared to stock?

The Stillen is about 240-260 it is expensive, but if you want the stock look this is the one to get. I have the Stillen with the z tube and it works just fine.

Re: What Intake should i go with?

screw it.. just take out all the tubing and the whole airbox and everything leading up to it,...all the way to the throttle body...

Then take a huge hose clamp and a sheet of "Bounty" (quicker thicker picker uper Bounty) and clamp it onto there... that way you filter out something....

It's custom, cheap, and easy to clean (up spills with)...

you know... come to think of it, someone should make a "ram air" cowl for our cars,...i wonder how that would look. kinda like the Stillen ones used for their superchargers, except facing forward like the Mustang GT's and the Firebird Ram Air. It would have to be more contoured and streamlined of course... but maybe that would solve the issue of "heat soak" on the plenum that everyone is always talking about...
air would be forced in the cowl and the cool air would naturally cool down the plenum...no?

what do you all think?

Lemme guess..Ace...you don't beleive in intakes and think that they are pointless on our cars?

The stileen air box has a more aggresive sound over stock, or no?

Re: What Intake should i go with?

how about getting nice 3in piping bent the right way and attach a HKS filter to it? That's all those expensive intakes are. I recommend the HKS filter because it is a dry filter.

Why is a dry filter recommended? ...because oiled K&N filters eventually muck up the MAF. This can cause a world of problems (bad idle, poor performance, car stalling, misfiring, poor gas mileage) I have seen this happen on many mass air sensor cars, and when the MAF was replaced with a good one, the car ran like a champ!

You can take a look at majority of Japanese cars, and they either use the dry HKS, or dry Greddy filters.
I like the HKS because I have seen many times when a standard K&N type filter was replaced with a HKS, and horsepower jumped. It's a very well engineered piece. It's not cheap though. Retail is $100.

But you'll thank yourself in the long run.
