droning after removing pre-muffler......

after replacing premuffler section with a straight pipe, the droning in the cabin is unbearable between the 1.5 and 2k rpm range....any coupe owner w/after market exhaust want to rid/sell their oem exaust midpipe?(Walnut, Ca 91789) most funny thing is that the exhaust note is not that loud if you're standing behind the car...but then again, there's no load on the engine either. thanks.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

you might try a glass pack. Many of the sedan owners have gone to an allied, imco, or magnaflow glasspack resonator. It will definitely cut the noise down but not all the way. I used an 18" allied glasspack and got a little of that drone from ~1500 to ~2200 rpms. I'd suggest either a coupe mid pipe or a 22" glasspack, which should cut down the drone considerably. I still have the 18" if you're interested.

You can also get the resonator off a Z. It works very well as it is a third the size of the stock unit and Nissan already did the R&D for it.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

i have a 22" magnaflow it does help the drone alot but when the car is fully heated up from 1300-1700 it can get pretty deep sounding inside the cabin.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

i see that you ended up with the 22" resonator......was the sound reduction that noticeable between the 18" and 22"? i don't mind a little droning for the sake of weight loss of 40lbs from the premuffler seciton! (bathroom scale method) btw; how much for the 18" glasspack? you can pm if you want, thanks.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

thanks for the inputs...........i accidently discovered a funny solution to "offset" the droning after washing my car.......i drove with the sunroof opened and the droning seemed to dissipate quite a bit.....

al503: if that 18" resonator looked like #!%! on the inside, i'm guessing it'll most likely disrupt flow, so, i'll pass on your offer. thanks anyhow.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

actually the inside is fairly smooth. it does have 'bumps' in a pattern on the inside but they are recessed against the walls. The diameter on the inside, despite the bumps, is still bigger than the pipes that hook up at either end.

I've heard good things about the magnaflow and I don't think you can go wrong with them.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

klg, your right with the windows down or sunroof open there is no droning. i think it might have something to do with the layout of the sedan, it having alot more cabin then the Z/Gc may have something to do why those cars dont have this drone.

Re: droning after removing pre-muffler......

I put in a 24" glasspack resonator and also get the drone. Though I like it. If it did it at normal cruising RPMs it would be a problem. Ironically, the drone only comes into play when I am driving very conservatively, like when I have the in-laws in the car. Otherwise The only time I am under 2000 RPMs is accelerating from a stop and then only very briefly.

I was just out and tried the windows up / down and I could here it either way. Wind noise with the windows down hides it a little, but it is still there. When the car is cold, there is no drone. You can only here it once it warms up.
