The venturi ring does add value to your air "compression". DaveO and I were just talking about this....
Put it this way, air can move in one of two ways...
like water in a river...the water closest to shore moves slower. The water there is shallower, clinging to the bottom and sides of the river. Water out in the center is moving swifter, but the river is not "cohesive" in its movement or speed.
The other way is a much the same way as a football is thrown, or a bullet travels down the barrel of a rifle - spiraled.
This tight "turbulent" forced is what our manifold craves.
DaveO can give you all the engineering behind it, I just make up cool analogies.
