increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

since i didn't want the engine to injest hot-under-the-hood air, i was wondering how i can increase outside air into the stock airbox as i was putting in the k&n panel filter......then, BAM!, the answer was right in front of me, literally!

i took out that "power duct" piece and repositioned that rubber sealer onto the airbox itself. opening to stock airbox almost doubled!

i also removed that funky tube/chamber that's connected to the bottom of the airbox. now there's just a hole at the bottom of the airbox

lastly, i also took a nut and used it as a washer to position the stock airbox approx. .25 inch higher to "catch" more incoming airflow. it's the nut on the right hand side as you're looking in/onto the engine that holds the stock airbox in place.

result? this intake setup roars, and i do mean roar! best of all, more outside air to engine! you can hear it at this saturdays meeting at performance nissan in duarte(so-cal).
just thought i share with fellow G'rs......

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

nope, no pics, just picture, if you will, the stock airbox with the "power duct" piece removed. it's just basically a bigger opening to the airbox, that's all.

If you have a pic after the mod, please post.

Have you noticed any change in your gas consumption?
What about perceived torque etc?

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

no concern if it provides an easy way for water to get in in case you drive through a puddle of water during a rainy season
Just wondering? maybe I am just totally wrong but in case

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

look at the 3 pics. i would only worry if that puddle of water is headlight level deep. keep in mind that this basically opens up the stock airbox, that's all..........if anything, quicker throttle response accompanied with a nice growl.

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

The bottom piece that you removed from the stock airbox is the resonator chamber. Airflow is designed to flow into the chamber. By removing the resonator, you may actually lose some airflow into the actual filter and intake tube since air will now just flow into the hole into the bumper area. IMO, I'd plug the hole instead of leaving it open.

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

I've done this and am planning on plugging that hole.

One question, is there a possibility that taking off the power duct would increase the amount of "hot air" that gets in, thus negating any performance gains from "more air"?

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

I don't think so, at least when you are moving. I have the
Stillen HiFlow AirBox. It is not completely enclosed. When
you are moving foreward, the rush of oncoming air should
prevent any engine hot air from moving foreward and into
the air box. That's just IMHO

Re: increase airflow to stock airbox mod.

with that rubber sealer that was on the powder duct piece now on the airbox, then, imo, the amount of hot air injested while car is not moving would be minimal. the oem setup has air being sucked in from the front of car, i just made that part bigger, that's all. i wouldn't worry too much about the quarter size hole at the bottom.....
