Great info Hydrazine. Thats pretty much what I've heard over the years. If you look at a K&N filter in the light, you can practically see through it. I suppose all the particles that get through end up in the oil filter. I've never had problems using K&N's in the past, but I'm sure the difference is very long term. I'm keeping my G for a while, so I'm sticking with paper filters.

Tony, I was considering Amsoil's new dry filter. Have you any experience with those?

And have you found a good alternative to the OEM paper filter?

My observations have been this.

Of all the dirty and really dirty plenums, all of them had some sort of aftermarket filter attached.
Of the clean plenums, there were a few that had after market filters attached.

I also noticed of all the paper filter being used, 100% of their plenums were clean. Even if the paper filter was dirty.

I also noticed 100% of the people who have had MAF sensor problems also had some sort of aftermarket filter being used.

Based on dyno testing I've done, I also found a clean paper filter dynos identically to a clean aftermarket filter.

------

In conclusion, my recommendation is to use stock paper filters to keep your engine clean and change them out often to maintain the best performance.
As some people say...."That's real talk" (Its a good thing)

Thanks for the info. I too noticed my new K&N filter was kinda over oiled. I don't want it to cause any new problems to my MAF sensor that wasn't there before IMO.

Yes I'd like to know this as well. I still have my stock replacement filter I bought about 3K miles ago which I can happily switch back if it'll save my car from having new problems with the MAF sensors down the line.

I plan on keeping this car a long time so I need to know up front if I should return my K&N filter and go back to my paper one if it'll save my car's sensor from going bad.

For the record, I opened my upper plenum twice. It was pretty clean with a light coating of oil. Probably what most people have. I did notice my maf housing had a very slight dusting of oily dust in it. Nothing to get alarmed about but I understand the concern. I ran the Stillen both times and had probably a good 30k on it. but I do know how to properly clean and oil these filters.

I'm on a K&N panel and will try the oem paper (as per my other intake post here). I'm probably opting to go OEM unless someone like Tony gives the "okay" for the Amsoil dry. AEM dry might be a choice too. But again, Tony has way more experience than me

I've been using the Amsoil Ea efficiency dry air filter for about not quite a year now... very nice filter, no mess, just pull it out and either blow it out from the back or delicately vacuum from the front with a shop vac to clean... and drop back in until your next oil change to check it.

I've used K&N in the past.. just too messy for me.. never sure if you oil too much.. or not enough!?!

I've seen about a 2-4 MPG increase (depending on the weight of my right foot), in my day to day driving by simply converting to an Amsoil dry filter... these days that's a PLUS in my wallet!!

just thought I'd share that bit of info with you...

I'm also using the Amsoil Ea Dry filter. It seems to be working well, I'm more concerned about keeping my engine dust free than adding 1hp from an oily filter. Honestly even if you gained 3hp, you wouldn't feel it, it's not worth it. There are far better mods out there than messing with your filter.

ive been using k&n filter for over a year now and i been dedicated to them for a long time now, but i might jump onto amsoil filter soon. K&N filter takes a while to clean, with letting it dry and re-oiling and all. good part is i dont have to clean it often, maybe about 2-3 times a year.

anybod want to buy my k&n filter. jk

That's an old test. But interesting. I wish there was one for the new Amsoil Ea filters. One not done by Amsoil.

^ you clean your k&n 2-3 times/year? you must live in a very dusty locale because k&n only stipulates cleaning them every 50k miles OR when excessively dirty. in fact they say that a mildly dirty k&n filter improves its efficiency (can't remember why - i know it sounds weird but it was in the instructions).

i've had k&n drop-ins in every vehicle of mine without any problems. no MAF messes or dirty plenums here...only $aving$ over oem paper replacements.

No, not yet.
I'm sure it won't be long before the jury comes in with a verdict on the dry filters though.

I took my K&N out and put in a brand new paper. Performance seemed the same w/ the paper and K&N. But better than with the dirty old 350Z filter that I had.

When I do the V-stack mod, it will be with the new paper. Hopefully this week.

BTW. It's a pain in the rear to change filters. I wonder what the stupid resonator thing at the bottom of our airboxes do? If I can remove that tube and plug up the hole in the box, it might make filter replacements alot easier. Anyone do this and what was the result?(if any)

Amsoil air filter

Just put in an Amsoil filter. Better than stock paper for performance and for filtration. Better than K&N for both as well. I used to use K&N in other cars I had, but it does not filter out fine particles and does not increase performance. Stock air filters are fine, but the AMSOIL filters out more, while breathing better, and it's cleanable. Just blow out the dust...no water, no oil.
