Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

While browsing through the 'Fujitsubo 2003/2004 Exhaust Manual' that I have exclusive access to, I noted some interesting information that I hadn't paid attention to before. I appologize if this has already been covered in the past.

So, on to what I have found ...

There are subtle differences in the JDM Z33 (350Z) vs. JDM CPV35 (G35 Coupe) exhaust systems. In other words, they are not identical. The Z33 model has a constant 76.3mm piping all the way through, while the CPV35 model starts at 76.3mm then reduces down to 60.5mm. The manual was not explicit in where this 70.6-60.5mm transition exists, but I'm fairly certain it is at the the mid-pipe to rear-pipe junction. This means everything aft of the mid-pipe (i.e. muffler) is actually 60.5mm.

Something to consider when ordering your Fujitsubo exhaust ... are you getting the Z33 model or the CPV35 model?

The barcode for the Z33 model = 4-944997-717137
The barcode for the CPV35 = 4-944997-719629

Fortunately, the Y-pipe for both Z33 and CPV35 had the same part number and starts with two 60.5mm openings and terminating with a single 76.3mm opening.

Naturally, the V35/HV35 (Sedan) has a totaly different exhaust system composing of constant 70mm piping throughout. In comparison, the Greddy EVO2 Exhaust for the Sedan transitions from 60.5mm to 70mm.

Also, the spec for the header. Starts with three 42.7mm openings and terminating with a single 50.8mm. So ideally if you have these headers you'd want to run cats that have 50.8mm openings at the mouth and 60.5mm at the tail-end (assuming mating to Fujitsubo Y-pipe).

Some food for thought.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

Nice research, Clint. As I told you earlier, I would love to find a 76.3mm Y-pipe back, single pipe exhaust for my sedan.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

So, does this mean that if I get a 350Z model Fujitsubo exhaust and add an extension piece, I will have better gains than the G35 model exhaust?

Yes, that is what the implication is. Although, in the real world, the acutal gain from such a thing may not be as big a difference. Bigger's not always better and there is definitely such a thing as too big of an exhaust. Having said that, if it were me I'd probably go w. the 350Z model w. an extension pipe mated to the front.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

Are we to assume that we are smarter than the Fujitsubo exhaust designers? Initially I thought that I'd buy the 350Z exhaust and add the extension, but now I'm starting to wonder why they made the change for our cars???

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

Anyone know the dimensions on the Nismo cat back? I don't hear of many people buying it and would love to hear some thoughts on it.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

The NISMO exhaust that we have in the good ol' USA are made to fit the 350Z. Their wheelbase is 8" shorter than our G35 coupes, so their exhaust is too short for the G. You have to add a 6" extension tube (that's right 6" not 8" due to the hanger locations under the car), and the exhaust tips hide under the rear diffuser (they're between 1" and 2" too short IMO). If you buy a Nismo JDM exhaust (the one that fits the G35) it costs almost $2,000 and takes 3-6 months to get here (I've been waiting since March 2nd for my JIC Y-Pipe and AL503 was waiting 2 weeks before that, so there is 3 months and no Y-Pipe as of yet). I've already been down that route with the Nismo exhaust and decided that Fujitsubo would be the best compromise IMO for fittment, looks and sound.

Fujitsubo makes the NISMO exhaust for our cars, therefore the Fujitsubo version of the exhaust, not only has bigger and longer tips, but fits ours cars perfectly, and they can ship their parts for the G35 into the USA w/o any problems (unlike NISMO).

Yes ... that is the assumption here. And as I've said ... I'm not sure bigger is necessary better. There is such as thing as too big of an exhaust.

btw ... I thought about waiting for the JIC y-pipe as well, but I finally caved in to the Fujitsubo y-pipe (purchased and installed yesterday). I've looked at it up close carefully. While the JIC looks very ideal ... this piece's no sloutch either. I don't think it's going to be a huge difference between the two. I'm going to assume I'm not smarter than the designers at Fujitsubo on this one too.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

Clint,
Where did you get it and how much? Are you running the Fujitsubo exhaust after the Y pipe also? Impressions so far?

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

I got the Y-pipe from Jason at Performance Nissan. Yes, I'm now running FULL Fujitsubo cat-back. This includes the Fujitsubo Y-pipe followed by the Fujitsubo Legalis-R Exhaust (sedan version).

Impression so far is very positive. I love how it sounds. Power gain wise initially was fairly in-line with what Fujitsubo has posted on their site (~4-5hp) or aka not much by the butt dyno. This makes sense knowing the OEM y-pipe is the #1 bottle neck at the moment. Once the Y-pipe is in place ... the advantage of the exhaust is now fully realized. I can now definitely feel a nice gain by butt-dyno standard. I'll plan for a dyno run soon.

Noise level did seem to increase some after the addition of the y-pipe.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

BTW ... looks like someone's selling their Fujitsubo Y-pipe + Exhaust for the COUPE here

Looks like a decent deal to me. I wouldn't be too concerned about the 'tear' as long as it's just the outter ss braid. Ask him for pics.

Re: Interesting Fujitsubo Exhaust Finding

Reggie ... I still might. I just want more time to play with this before I decide. It was an impulsive buy at the moment. I got it more to fill the curiosity of yet another SEDAN exhaust available. however, the more I spend time w. it ... the more I like it. hehe.

I'll keep you posted in a month or so. Let me know if you want a test drive.
