Venting Driver's Side Valve Cover to Atmosphere

I just have two questions about this:

1) For those of you venting the valve cover to the atmosphere, where did you position the breather filter, and does it get messy at all? Like does the filter get all oily and spray a film of oil? My engine bay is super clean, and it has to stay that way. I have a friend who did this on his boosted M3 and his engine bay has a nice film of oil now....ewww

2) Can use 1/2" heater hose? I Googled it and other car guys on other forums seem to be using it, but I just wanted to check first. I'm using 3/8" fuel line for my PCV --> plenum catch can.

Can you elaborate as to what venting the side valve cover would do? The bnefits/downsides of it? The general concept of it even, as Im curious about this.
