RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
Which one will give me better performance and sound?
Also, when getting the plenum, should I keep my original plenum in case of warranty risks? Does anyone know if the Plenum void the factory warranty?

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
Plenum = deeper sound
RT Cats = more raspy sound
I'd imagine they both add a little bit of hp/torque by themselves, but when combined... SHAZAMM!
If you get the crawford plenum and keep the core, it's like having your g/f on birth control pills and still buying condoms but not using them... why?

Yeah, I'd agree with neffster--both together would be the way to go. An improvement to both sides of the air flow equation generally yields the best results. You can start with one and then add the other (like I'm doing), but I think that cats and plenum are arguably one of the best 2 effective mods "airflow" mods.

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
but ... dont forget the Technosquare ECU. You need it to control the Air to Fuel ratio. With the cats and plenum the car will run to lean. From what I have read that could be dangerous. Someone mentioned they left the stock intake in to control this problem. Do a search and verify.

I'd have to argue with that. First of all...turning in your core is more like getting a vasectomy. Should you ever sell the car, or have a need to make it look stock again (warranty issues - even those not related to intake) you will not be able to do so without an inconvenient wait.
I kept my plenum and it's wrapped in the cabinet. if I am strapped for cash, I can always turn in the core to Doug and get the $$. I just like to keep my stock parts.
but that's me. to each their own. g/f's come an go.....

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
Dan, I'd get both if you can fund it, but if you go with the cats, go with Kinetix. I read that RT cats have been giving Z and G drivers problems...and the Kinetix sound better...no rasp
2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!

Dan,
I just came back from a local G35 meet here in Toronto and had a discussion there with Colin (one of the forum moderators) about this same topic re: the Crawford, which I plan on getting.
When he got his Crawford he kept the original plenum and plans on reinstalling it if/ when he sells the car -- or at least he will have this option (I guess it will depend on the buyer). Also in case there's some unforeseen warranty issue, etc. he can put it back on.
When I get mine soon, I plan to do the same. I figure there's nothing to lose by hanging on to it because you can always get your money back later, should you ever want to.
(Although, it just ocurred to me... if everyone did this then Doug might find himself short of stock plenums...!)

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
I've also heard this several times from the tech/mod guys at 350Z forums.
I asked Colin (one of the forum mods) about this at the last meet, since he's running a CAI/ Crawford/ exhaust etc. That is, I asked if there was a problem with the car running too lean and if the Technosquare might need reprogramming... I figure there's a chance the lean mix could retard timing and actually decrease say the bottom end torque?
He said he didn't think it was a problem. I asked if he dynoed before and after and he said he probably should have but didn't.
So for me, this is still an open question...? Whenever I do a search I come across different answers. I find many guys that are gaining good top-end horsepower (say over 4000rpm) but they're losing lowend torque down below say 2000 rpm. That worries me, because I obviously don't want to lose any grunt coming off the line.
By the way, these are from guys who have just done the intake/ cats without reprogramming the ECU. But if what they say is true, then I figure a Technosquare reprogram would be the ticket to get solid gains across the whole powerband (?)

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
What about a SAFC-II by Apexi instead for only $350-ish instead? You would be able to control your air/fuel and not have to be w/o your ECU for half a week. Wouldn't this be the better buy?

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
but you get the rev-liniter cut out with the TS Ecu. I want that, but not abou to give up that do right quick without more airflow. I am doing headers and test pipes in June, then we'll see about this plenum schmenum stuff.

Re: RT Cats or V5 Plenum?
Hey Neffster,
Yeah I think that would work perfectly. I know the first generation SAFC (when the instructions were all in Japanese, thus useless) from a local guy's car and I hear good things about the SAFC-II from some people who've gone FI.
The unit's "knock sensor" would definitely tell you when your timing's off from running too lean.
Actually Colin (the moderator) said the exact same thing you did re: sending away the ECU for a week.
By the way, I've seen those SAFC-II's on eBay for around $260 or so (new in box)... so yeah, good point -- that might be a good solution.
