Should I be concerned about crack in catalytic converter?

I recently bought an 05 6MT coupe with 19k on it and after getting some body work done, the shop manager pointed out that there was a crack in the passenger side cayalytic converter due to the car bottoming out at some point. This isn't really a surprise as the car was previously owned in the NJ, NYC area. I expected some bumps and bruises from being a city car.

Should this be of any concern?

I imagine repairs would cost $800 plus or should I have somebody cut it off and straight pipe it or possibly welding a plate over the crack? Also, the driver side converter is dented, but no cracks have formed.

Thanks for any input.

I guess its time for your first mod. =)

High Flow cats ftw

but on the real, unless there is a sound difference that bothers you, or you are concerned about emissions, performance drop etc etc. I would not do anything.

and if you were considering repairing them, I would not spend 800 bucks on it.

You can pick up a nice pair of HFCs for half that price and more performance/more agressive sound.

you can pick up a set of used cats on these forums or ebay for WAY under 800.

Thanks for the tip. I'm definitely going to go with some new high-flow cats. However, now I'm worried that the mod bug has bit me and I'll be spending more money on other upgrades.

Could I scrap the old converters and get some decent money for them?

It is a felony to replace oem cats during emission warranty [prior to 100k]with non oem versions.

If you tamper with emissions and sell a vehicle [fraud] the new owner can sue you and have the courts force you to pay to return emission systems to oem.

Always keep oem cats to reinstall prior to a sale

yeah keep the OEM cats, keep everything off your car, you might need it one day.
