Exclamation 2003 Headers install problem, help

Guys,

I have one of the very first 2003 G35 Coupe and I am trying to install some Ichiba headers, which are identical to the DC or Strups, but after installation of the left one it is hitting the steering rod. It is so close that i can no longer turn. The mechanics tripled check the installation and everything is fitting fine. Are there different versions of the 2003 G35C? I see some people posting about 2003.5, is this it...

Thanks,
Gabe

I'm assuming these were purchased from a US market shop. Aftermarket headers are built in a jig by hand and clearance under the hood is very tight. The issue you're having is a manufacturing defect. Either you'll have to modify the header (ie remove it and hammer the tube so you can turn) or return the headers. If these headers are JDM, then it is possible the headers were designed for the right-hand drive G.

I bought these from one of our sponsors, so I'm pretty sure it's meant for US market.

If it is a manufacturer defect, wouldn't they all be like this then since they are built in a jig? I guess the last resort would be to hammer them, do you know if there is a strongly likelihood of breaking the welds if i do this?

Thanks for the response.

Even in a jig, the measurements (especially with aftermarket parts) are rarely spot on and there is some room for error. When clearances are super tight, the slightest measuring error can result in a clearance problem. Being off by 1/8" could throw the measurement off on another part by 1/4". This is what has annoyed me about the aftermarket. About 90%, an aftermarket part does not fit perfectly and/or needs some work to make it fit. I don't know why it's so hard to have a decent QA/QC program in place.

A little cohersion on the pipes should compromise the welds, but your parts warranty goes out the window. I'd send the vendor pictures of the problem and see what they'll do about it.

Called Ichiba USA this morning and they are sending new headers over just in case they don't fit. I'm surprised how easy it was for them just to send it. Provided them with a few pics, give them my address, and it was on it's way to the shop. Hopefully it will be ok.
