Sedan Stillen (or not) HELP ASAP!

I've read all the comparative posts I could find AND listened to the various sound clips, but need some more feedback. First, the only sound clips I could find were for the 350Z. I guess the coupe exhaust would be close – but I’m looking for sedan info. I’m assuming sedan vs. coupe sound will be significantly different, even for the same brand (let’s use Stillen as an example). Is that true? I’m heavily leaning towards the Stillen, but am concerned it might be TOO loud.

From what I can discern from other posts, the Borla is the least noticeable of the dual cat-back systems (closest to stock sounding). Many like the sound. But… It appears to offer the least hp/tq gains. I would probably go with the Borla at the “old” price. They seem to be in the $800 range now with the price increase – now much closer to the Stillen. Also, the Borla seems to have a LOT of pieces (more places for leaks?).

The Fujitsubo sounds nice on the Z, but they don’t make a sedan system as far as I’m aware. Anyway, it is a little too raspy (too much high freq. content) for my taste. The aftermarket Y-pipe, coupe mid-pipe, HKS muffler combo seems to have received mixed reviews (plus all three would be nearly as $$$ as the Stillen).

Bottom line: The sedan exhaust is a little TOO quiet IMHO. I think the coupe stock exhaust sounds great, and don’t want to go much louder than that. Does that rule out the Stillen? Ideally, after optimizing the sound, I’d also like to have some noticeable power gain (maybe a real +10 rwhp gain?).

I know some think Stillen is “over-priced”. Neglecting that, how is the build quality compared to the other systems? We have a dyno-day coming up in NorCal and I would like to get the exhaust installed for that. So, I’ve gotta make a decision quick!

Finally, sorry about the duplicate posting. I figured that the Exhaust forum might be too new for people to regularly check, and I need some quick responses (so posted to Sedan as well).

The Stillen catback is very nice but it leans towards loud. I dynamated my trunk and the sound problem disappeared.

The borla exhuast is sick!! Best combo, ive said it a million and 1 times. Bora TD and XERD test pipe's = a beast. Witht he pulleys, intake and grounding kit also. My borla sounds nothing like stock and is loud like an M3 and a corvette together, its pretty sick.

The Stillen exhaust on the sedan make more power than anyone. Dyno tested at 21HP to the wheels!
I dont know about you, but to me thats a huge gain for the money.

According to Stillen ... yes. But anyone expecting 21hp gain to the rear wheel is seriously in for a shock of their life! We are all still waiting for someone to independently dyno their car (preferably a 6mt sedan) with Stillen Exhaust as the sole mod.

I have the Stillen, K&N, Z-Tube, ECU reflash, and snake-oil (grounding) wires. I'll let you know how my dyno on 8/14 turns out. I doubt that anything but the Stillen exhaust will yield noticable (>2) HP gains.

Chenga,
Thanks for the offer ... I'd be glad to see what kind of power you'll manage. However, your result will have been altered by the TechnoSquare ECU reflash. So, at the end ... the quest for the pure Stillen Exhaust gain is still on. Non the less ... your result will give us all a better idea.

Regards,

Re: Sedan Stillen (or not) HELP ASAP!

I'll be at the same dyno-day with a stock ECU, Stillen, and Z-tube/K&N. I concur that the Z-tube/K&N combo is probably in the noise floor of dyno accuracy. Any difference from stock will be, in my case, almost entirely attributable to the Stillen exhaust.

Re: Sedan Stillen (or not) HELP ASAP!

gokart,
Excellent! That will be one dyno plot I'll be looking to with great anticipation. Curious ... will there be any bone-stock (or intake only mod) people running there? That will serve as a good reference point to better gauge the offset between the DynoJets used between you guys' and mine.

Cheers,

Gokart,

Why you say Fujitsubo doesn't have sedan exhaust. Look at Clint's car mods.
