'04 G35x w/ 51K miles.

Was doing some work on my car and noticed the following corrosion around the connection of my y pipe to what I think are the CATs. Looks like the joint, the pipe inside the housing, and the housing itself is heavily corroded.

The same corrosion occurs on both sides. Plus I notice a heavy corroded spot on an arm of the y-pipe (no hole yet).

A) is this common?
B) what is the part that the y pipe is connecting to? CAT? Simple housing around the CAT?
C) do the Cats need to be replaced??

 

I have never seen rust like that under a G

 

I think I got similiar stuff on mine. There is DEFINETLY rust on the exhaust components. I think it's pretty normal for where I live.

I also think what you got the rust on is the outer shell so it won't have immediate effect on the function of the CAT and therefore doesn't need to be replaced.

Those parts just have very thin metal, they are no match for extended exposure to road salt (probably not an issue for you?). I don't think there is anything that can be done to prevent it other than storing the car; you can't rust protect the exhaust components because it would just burn off.

Next time I'm under my car, I'm going to have a better look.

 

Salt from the roads do it.

 

Looks like the rust is on the heat shielding/outer metal as someone else mentioned too, so Iwouldn't lose sleep over it personally.

 

Kind of started reading more into this... found that some use Dupli-Color paint to cover the exhaust. There is one that can withstand very high heat. I might try to to do that... get liquid rust coverter and apply it to the rusty parts, then the paint. I'm sure it won't stop the rust but perhaps slow it down.
