K&N filter?

What does it improve? Does it positively effect MPG in any way? And I hear it's re-usable...is that true? Thanks. =)

Re: K&N filter?

It increses the ammount of air the engine can intake..it does improve the MPG by 2mpg... average...... It is re-usable but it does need occasional cleaning and re-oiling..

Re: K&N filter?

It should also be noted that high-flow air filters let a little more crud pass through.. and it winds up in your oil. So don't skip out on those oil filters, either.

Re: K&N filter?

pesti,

An increase of 2 MPG? My BS meter is beeping like crazy . If that was the case, manufacturers should add K&N type air filters to all their cars; it would do wonders for the CAFE averages.

... Or did you mean it adds about 2 HP?? This may seem to be more likely. Yeah?

Re: K&N filter?

Auto makers don't own any part of K&N so why would they spend the money to add the filter. If they did add it they would call it a perfornace package and put stupid graphics on the car and charge $900 for a filter and some ugly stickers everyone will remove. The manufactures are cheap and if they can't get from their own sources for nothing and then charge you an arm & a leg for it it's just not worth it to them.

Re: K&N filter?

I said K&N type filters, not the actual K&N brand. It shouldn't be a great deal to get some gauze, oil it, and wrap it around some mesh. If there truly is a gain of 2 MPG, the auto makers would certainly step up and make this, or find a company to do so (unless K&N has one hell of a patent out there).

My point is, I think pesti meant 2 extra HP rather than 2 extra MPG.

Cool?

Re: K&N filter?

Hey bro, I'm sure Pesti meant H/P not MPG's. From what I've heard and seen, you can pick up at least a few ponies. Mileage increase would be very marginal, but maybe something.....L8r

Re: K&N filter?

The mileage I get on my sedan fluctuates from tank to tank by as much as 3 mpg sometimes, so I think any current observations of filters affecting mileage statistically fall in the "no change" category.. unless you have multiple tanks of gas driven under the same conditions with and without the K&N to compare. It may provide a slight boost, but I'd say it would be less than 1/4 mpg.

Re: K&N filter?

I tend to agree with ryoken... the gain in fuel efficiency may be so small as to be immeasurable. I'm still contemplating the K&N though.

Re: K&N filter?

I had a Mustang that I put a K&N Filter in and yes it increases MPG and HP both!!! great investment for the price and life of the car. just bought a G35 Sedan, going to prolly get one for that too!
