I've looked around and couldn't find any decisive information on catch can quality. I'm looking to to get one where the placement won't interfere with my stock '06 airbox/intake and the Relentless Auto strut tower brace. Also the easier to siphon/ remove blowby the better. I hear problems with Weapon R welds are common plus I've never really been a fan of their products. I don't have much information on ARC or any other brand. Whats your opinion?

Interference with the intake shouldn't be a problem since the PCV valve is on the other side of the engine. There are several brands that make very similar cans but I believe the NRG would be the cheapest of the bunch.

 

These Simota Oil Catch cans look nice and are priced right. I came across these on NASIOC (Subaru STI/WRX) forum but can't find any substantial user feedback. Simota Intakes and Filters are pretty reputable. Can and kit contents look good. 6.75" tall, 3" diameter should be a good size as well.

NRG have some good and well priced catch cans.

 

I have the NRG and the only isue I had with it was leaking. I spread a little RTV on both of the endcaps and reinstalled and the leak is gone. I collect about 1/4 cup every couple of months so I know it's working.

 

The NRG looks like it would interfere with the stock intake. It doesnt seem like there's a lot of room else where in the bay to locate a tank of that size either.

 

After looking at a bunch of different oil catch cans I decided to try the Simota Oil Catch Can because of reviews found on the NASIOC forum for my WRX. Well, with a little modification of the supplied bracket, I installed it upright next to the upper radiator hose for a perfect fit.
I like the unit because it's polished stainless (see pic), has a see-through oil level gauge, a bottom drain, and a baffle to prevent oil from flowing through. It came with two sizes of fittings, bright blue fuel pressure grade hose and stainless steel clamps.
I adjusted the supplied bracket to fit in the location shown by bending it on my vise to reduce the 90 degree elbow by about 20 degrees and to lift it above the radiator hose itself. Pics are deceiving because its not resting or touching any hose or intake part. There's enough clearance all around. The bracket is attached to engine block where the radiator hose meets its metal intake assembly.

hey blue iv had to nrg cans mounted like you and both have had leaking problems. i have tried some seals all with no luck.

when you used the RTV did you run it on the old gaskets or did you throw those away just ran the bead on the bare material.

If anyone is interested, Saikou Michi has a Micro can that you can now fit to the power steering reservoir bracket. Just fitted mine so if you request it as per the 350Z design he's just done, he can sort it out for you.


If anything, just make sure whatever can you get has proper baffles inside it.

 

Sent Saikou Michi an email about a custom can a while back with no reply. The Simota looks nice but I opted for the Custom Corvette Accessories Catch Can. Came in today and it looked great. It had an issue with the bottom petcock valve being leaky, so I replaced it for a few bucks at the parts store. Overall it ended up being exactly what I was looking for in design and price. Thanks for the info guys.

 

If you're adding a can due to oil consumption concerns I'd highly recommend a vented catch can. If you use a vented can and bypass the intake tube / plenum (just running PCV -> Can -> Driver side valve cover) it prevents pressure build ups and avoids all chance reintroduction back into the intake/plenum.

I'm using a cheap all-start performance can, easy to drain, little taller than I would have liked but with a new coolant overflow it mounted up in the front corner of the bay and was pretty cheap.
