350z y pipe. why is it better?
Hi guys
I'm doing up a 2001 V35 Skyline 250GT sedan (Japanese equivalent of 2003 G35 2.5L rear wheel drive).
I would like to know: what makes the 350z y pipe better than the 2.5L standard item?.. Ive heard it is a direct replacement and am planning on doing the swap.
And also.. ive seen them referred to as a 350z HR y pipe..... what does HR stand for?

oh and also.... is it ok to do this mod on its own.... or is there another 350z exhaust part that will bolt straight on to the sedan?
BTW... yes ive searched for this topic and found no simple answer... sorry if ive missed it

You would want a Y pipe from a 350z that has a HR engine, i.e. 2007-2008 350z models. I forget what other y pipes are also compatible.
I popped in "+350z +hr" for thread titles in the search -

^First thread is the godfather of the 350z hr y-pipe mod. Read it and your questions will most likely be answered. Pictorial difference of DE y-pipe on left, HR y-pipe on right below.

I am not sure that the posters above noticed that you are talking about a 2.5L engine. In the US, we just got a 2.5L in a G this year! It's called the G25.
The original G35 engine is called the VQ35DE. The VQ35HR y-pipe is supposed to flow better than the VQ35DE y-pipe, but I would guess it would be a too big to flow well on the 2.5L. I would also guess that the y-pipe in the newer model 2.5L would flow better than your 2001, so that might be an option for you. You can try checking the V37 part of the forum here, as that is the only version that gets the 2.5L option here.

yeah thats the other thing i was going to add.... the engine in mine is a VQ25DD.....
the car is still referred to as a V35 model over here, with a spec badge of 250GT for the 2.5L (300GT for the VQ30 engine, and 350GT for the VQ35)
so yeah, mine being the VQ25DD makes me wonder if 350Z parts are even going to work....

v35 is the chassis code which is independent of the engine code. I would think most G35 parts or 350z parts would NOT work for your car

If the 350z y pipe with long branches fits, i will use it - just because i can.... but i expect there to be some differences between the VQ35 and VQ25 headers such as different flange design or something like that........ however... anything can be modified.
I had a 250GT a while back. Suspension parts from the G35 and 350z fit perfectly. So does the cat-back exhaust from a G35. Dont know about engine parts though - the intake from a G35/350Z fits but that is far as I got.
