Dealer Quoted $2400 for single catalytic converter replacement

Hey all,

I have a 2007 G35 Sedan and the CEL recently came on. I checked the code and saw that it was related to the catalytic system and decided to go ahead and get it diagnosed fully by the dealer. Now the dealer is stating that one of my cats in bank 2 is bad and another one of the four is on the verge of failure. They quoted me $2400 for a single cat replacement. This seems astronomically high to me.

My brother works at a shop back home and has given me much lower numbers but I was wondering if anyone here has had to get their cats replaced and whether or not they decided to go with aftermarket options?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

I'm no mechanic, but believe there are only 2 catalytic converters so I'm not sure why there would be 2 per bank for a total of 4.

You could buy HFC's new for ~$500 for a pair and spend $50 in labor to have it installed at a shop or DIY for free with a set of ramps and a socket set.

Sounds like either the info about it being just 1 cat you posted is wrong or the dealer is trying to stick it to you.

Did you get a written estimate? If so post a pic of it.

Cats are easy to do.. If there were doing the headers I could MAYBE see a that cost with labor... Cats are fairly easy to install.

Please give dealer middle finger.
And you sure it's the cats? It sounds as if you got 4.

Could the four have been o2 sensors? I could see a lot if they want to replace both cats and all four o2 sensors but $2400 is ridiculous. Go to autozone and have them scan the OBD2 and see what is wrong. Post up the code they pull and do some research and you should have a better idea of what the problem is.

That's about right for cats. They are extremely expensive. Not sure if you're n Cali or not, but I heard they started making it to where you can only get dealer cats. Supposedly its now illegal for anyone to sell or install aftermarket cats.

I would have asked the stealership If I had stupid written on my forehead? Check the laws in NC to find out if high flow cats are legal in your state to start, they're $500+ install. The other possibility, Magnaflow makes factory cats legal in all states. Ask your local muffler shop for availability and prices...Gary

could also try to find a used pair of OEM cats from a junkyard or someone on the forums for 200$ and toss those in

^yes, everyone not in Cali or NY/Jersey puts art pipes on their car anyway, so I see low miles cats up for sale on here constantly for next to nothing. Just saw some for $150 a couple weeks ago with 32k miles.
