Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

My understanding is that a catback exhaust is all the piping after the catalytic converter.. hence the name.. catback (from the cat, back).

Otherwise you're looking at just a replacement muffler and exhaust tip.

There are also high-flow cats available, but EPA regulations prevent you from installing one until the odometer passes 50,000 miles. Straight-pipes (no catalytic converter at all) are not street legal.

Just between us... a picture of the Stillen G35 Sedan Dual Catback Exhaust system PROTOTYPE

We need to remember that prototypes are fit and function, pretty comes later.

To me, it looks real good for a prototype system!

Stillen's G35 Sedan PROTOTYPE dual catback exhaust tips.

Hopefully the commercial version will be similar.

Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

Nice picts. So when can we order this dual cat back, dual tip muffler system? and do you know how much it's going to cost? I talked to one of the sales person, forget the name, and he said it will be out in a month. Not sure how much I can believe him but I am definitely gonna get it once it comes out.

Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

I haven't heard the latest version of the prototype, but rumor says it sounds "powerful".

What makes up a "good" exhaust sound is very subjective. Many of us will differ on which exhaust sounds good or the qualities that make a good sounding exhaust note... including how "loud" is loud? (Example? Borla's new 350Z/G35 Coupe system. Of course Sedan owners remain unaffected as Borla doesn't build one for us.)

I know what I don't like!

#1 - Any six cylinder engine that sounds like it's a four!

#2 - Raspy "ricy" sounding exhausts from any G35 Sedan or Coupe. (I've heard some that aren't for me.)

#3 - Any car that sounds like a motorcycle. (Example... six cylinder SHOs with the single midpipe Flowmaster exhaust.)

What I like sounds more like a small V8. To me, the ideal Sedan exhaust sound would be that of Stillen's true dual catback 350Z/G35 Coupe system... only 80-85% as loud
at idle and partial mid-range throttle conditions.

I'm told the current prototype may be a little louder than I'd like for a "stealthy" Sport Sedan. We'll have to see and hear what the commercial system sounds like. Then we'll know if it sounds good!

Cost and availability are still in the rumor phase.

Be sure and keep us posted. I wanted to email Stillen to express interest in the Sedan exhaust, but they don't have an email address anywhere on their site. Not very professional if you ask me.

You might want to contact Adam@Stillen.com - Tell him you're interested.

Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

I've ordered my system.

This morning Adam posted the following on the "G35 Sedan" Forum.

Hi Guys,

First of all - Yes, it will be made! I have received a number of messages from people thinking that it's just a rumor, it's not - thanks to G35 Sedan owner and enthusiast Dave O. who has been grinding us to make this system since day one:-)

Here's the news as of today....

Construction: True dual path mandrel bent cat back (2.5") pipe design. T-304 stainless steel .
The current prototype design has a single muffler that is dual (piping) in / dual (3" tips) out.

Cost: TBA. The cost is usually released a couple of weeks prior to completion of the first production run.

Availability: ETA Min. 30 days/Max. 60 days. This is still only a guesstimate because of a lot of variables with production scheduling.

Horsepower: Excellent. Kick ***. Surprising. These are a few of the words that R&D were using. I have not been told the exact results that will be the advertised HP for the system that's going into production, but I think it's safe to say that at least 15 HP at the wheels (or about 20 flywheel HP) will be had with this system.

Sound: I have heard the test system here and I think it has "tolerable personality" as do the other 3.5 systems that we have made. Of course, everyone has different ear. I'm sure that one of the sedan owners with the new system reserved will make a sound clip or video for all to review.

Now, if you like you can reserve a system from the first production run. There no payment required to do this. I'll contact you when your exhaust is ready and we have a sale price. Please contact me directly (if you don't already have a contact here) since I'm on a commission based salary:-)

Also, let me know if any of you need a catalog. Just send me your name/address details to adam@stillen.com

I hope this helped everyone. I'll let you know if anything new comes up.

Cheers,

Adam Hume

Great news Dave. I think I will stick with my HKS for now. Post a sound clip and pics when you get it.

Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

Wanting an update directly from the horses mouth (so to speak), I emailed Adam with a few questions. Adam's board post is actually a copy of his reply to me. Thanks again Adam.

To expand further, some additional questions required further follow-up with R&D:

1.) clearance specs to rear swaybar for those considering aftermarket bars;
2.) potential clearance issues when using lowering springs such as Eibach's ProKit;
3.) bolt-on applicability to existing headers known to work on the sedan (i.e. Borla);
4.) what pre-muffler resonators they intend to supply

I have pre-ordered subject to these -and the pricing- questions. Hopefully, pricing will reflect that some applicable G35 sedan system engineering has already been done as a result of Stillen's 350Z cat back exhaust, and that less materials are used for the G system as well. Certainly, 10% less, or sub-$1k doesn't seem like asking alot. We shall see.

So, if anyone is even remotely interested in this exhaust, please contact Adam ASAP. There is no deposit required, and the more potential sales Stillen is aware of, the better the initial pricing should be. Thanks for your efforts DaveO, here's hoping we will be satisfied soon!

Re: Sedan Owners - Catback Exhaust Systems

nice work guys! I have been waiting for a dual catback for my sedan, and I have been prepared to wait for quite a while ... never have I imagined in my wildest dreams that it would come so soon ... needles to say, I contacted Adam as soon as I've read this message >8)

I also contacted Borla a month or so ago expressing interest in such a system and inquiring whether something like it is being planned ... I haven't heard back from them >8(

I've been waiting 14 months for Borla to get back to me.
