Worth it to do a y-pipe?

I'm going to be installing headers and some high-flow cats (decided against test pipes and sold them, heh, should have thought it out more before hand, oh well ^_^ )

Would there be any point in adding in a y-pipe? Just a generic one like intensepower.......wondering if there will be any impact on power and/or sound, once the other 2 are thown on?

IMO, if you're doing Hi-Flows, yes I'd also do a Mandrel bent "Y" Pipe. Be sure you get one with the mesh expension sleeves. For good quality cheap, the Megan looks good.

Look here to see it. If you do any "Y" Pipe, the outlet is usually 3" or so, and the stock exhaust is 2.25", I believe. You'll need some kind of reducer cone to neck down to the stock size.

what do the mesh expansion sleeves do?

oh yea, and am I going to be losing any torque by also changing out the y-pipe? i've read some previous posts where peoples concerns w/ adding a y-pipe to headres and high-flow cats was loss of low-end torque

They allow some flexibility in the pipe, there is movement in the engine, and the mesh soaks that up.

Are you on the stock exhaust right now? My bassani came with a X-pipe that bolts up right behind the cats, so you get a dual exhaust system. Just curious since I live out in Airdrie if you ever wanna hear or see the Bassani exhaust.

i[m not quite certain what i want to do - i have an invidia g200 exhaust under my bed right now, but a friend has expressed interest in it; if i sell it, i'll actually make a profit on it, lol.....so now i'm deciding whether or not i want to keep the stock catback

stock sounds pretty nice

if i kept the stock catback, then i'd probably do a y-pipe -> right now i've got headers and kinetix high flow cats waiting for install.

I've got the Invidia, with Crawford Cats and Headers. I've added an "H" Pipe to the system. Fit and Finish were great. The G200 has a great sound, no drone, and makes a bit more power. This was and still is my exhaust system of choice.

Y with stock exhaust is hideous. I did it for 2 weeks while waiting for the exhaust to come. There was serious hesitation on the mid-high end. Cats alone though are pretty legit on a stock system.

.....so you're saying you weren't pleased with it (aftermarket Y) then on the stock catback setup?

That's a phenomenon that I never heard. A "Y" Pipe with the stock exhaust should work just great, if you neck the "Y" down to the stock pipes 2.25" diameter. Your problem is the first I've heard of.

/exactly aftermarket Y + stock exhaust and stock cats = serious bottleneck
aftermarketY + crawfords + stock exhaust = loss of torque and serious bottleneck

crawford cats + stock Y, stock Exhaust = gain in torque, no bottle neck . best choice only $500.

Id only add the Y if you got the cats and aftermarket exhaust.

actually, during my searches on this issue i've read similar issues with people who've piece-assembled and exhaust (e.g., only doing headers and cats and y and catback later on), so I'm not that suprised by it.

Hey bro, is the Fujitsubo exhaust with the cat and intake droning on the freeway around 3K rpm???

HKS makes a Y pipe that has the same id as the stock exhaust (65mm), so it'll provide a better flow without any bottleneck.
