i did all the mods individually. intake, then mrev, then z tube. my thought would be that more air in = more combustion and more exhaust out. i don't know if someone wants to do these mods in different order, but my conclusion is that the z tube makes the greatest difference in sound. wot at 4k to 5k is very similar to the sound my 5.0 mustang use to make (89 gt).
power difference was negliable with the intake. when the mrev was put in and i was still under break-in period. i'm not sure if the ecu has adjusted after my change in driving style after break-in, or the mrev is completely responsible for the change, but the car has definitely gotten quicker. still wasn't completely impressed. i came from a 1989 5.0 mustang (all torque), to a 91 tt 300z (very steep torque curve), 93 rx7tt, 95 supra turbo (fastest and quickest stock car i have ever owned).
now i have the g, a 97 a4 and 2004 nissan maxima also (with what i assume is the same engine) so i was expecting much more out of this car stock. still not content, but much better than it was.
as far as waiting for a smooth cf ztube, all things being equal, i would do so. kinda rough on the inside, but not too bad. the biggest resistance i think would come from the two rubber connection pieces. also, i ended up using the rubber connection coming off of the throttle body. the supplied rubber end connectors were too short.

Thanks for the clarification. I understand what you mean now. You are likely right in your assumptions.
If you are truely curious have someone rev the car with you outside of it and you should be able to tell which sound it is that you hear. I would be curious myself but I'm inclined that way.
Good luck with getting the car where you would like it in the future.

Well that would make sense if the sound is related to the amount of airflow. At WOT there is a much larger airflow coming in
. Now I do find your description of a whin like a turbo interesting. I personally don't notice a sound like that (not one I would describe that way at least). There is a chance that you have some things that aren't seated up quite all the way and it is cause a very minor leak. I wouldn't really call that the same sound as you describe either though. Somewhat curious really. Have you done any modifications on the exhaust system yet?
