Body shop or Dealer?

Only two months since I picked up my coupe and I've accumulated several scratches and had it keyed. My bumper and door was scratched due to my own carelessness pulling in and out of a tight driveway. I garage my coupe at all times when I'm not using but I had it on the street a few nights ago because I was gonna be heading out again in a couple of hours and when I came out I notice my trunks been keyed up! Probably by some envious *****! It's become a real eye sore and I'm planning on repairing it. I want it to look factory new again so I'm debating between bringing it back to the dealer or a body shop. I'm a little hesitant about a body shop because I do want the car to be repainted with factory paint and I don't have a regular body shop I go to whom I can trust. Should I just take it back to the dealership or can anyone recommend a good body shop in New York or any other alternatives? Thanks!

Hello, I have worked at both dealerships and independent body shops. There is no such thing as "factory paint." The dealerships use the same brand of paints as the independent body shops.

The advantage of going to a dealership will be the that the painter will be more familiar with matching the color on your car.

You might save a little bit of money going to an independent shop. Ask family and friends if they can recommend a body shop that they had a good experience with.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info autopainter! FYI - I went to a few body shops to get an estimate and some were convincing of how good their work is because they claim they get their paint from the dealer. Based on what you said, I'm assuming that's all BS since everyone, regardless of dealer or independent shops gets the same paint and it's just a matter of how close they can match it. I don't understand why they would even bother making such a claim then.

Most dealership don't have their own paintshop...So they work with local shops that they trust...They will give them the color code and will match as closing as they can...
