Sounds Like you work for Infiniti (never gone), The whole soft paint thing is crap. The paint should be durable and the clearcoat should be too. Period. I also have an 05 Ford Expedition and it has 3 times the miles on it without any signs of paint problems. It is also Black. I have owned a BMW and a Grand Prix and they had no paint problems. I bet if I bet if I bought a Kia it would be fine also. Infiniti has just put too little paint on their cars and it shows. I can see my bumper showing more abuse but not the hood of my car. It looked worse than the bumper. I had it repainted and 9K miles later not mark exists.

Sorry dude, but the whole soft paint thing is NOT crap. Infiniti's paint is soft, and that's old news here. Anyone that details vehicles will tell you the same thing. Infiniti applies the same amount of microns of paint as any other manufacturer. I detailed a Porsche 911 and it had softer paint than my G. On the other end of the spectrum, I also detailed an 02 Vette convertible and it's paint was hard as a rock.

OK - so yes, the paint is softer than some, and harder than others. Softer paint is there for a specific reason - LESS CHANCE OF GETTING ROCK CHIPS, etc. It's not hard - or as brittle as others - so rock chips are harder to get, and any damage, like pits, are actually easier to repair without major work.

If your getting lots of rock chips - then its where your driving or who you are driving behind.

My body guy remembers a paint recall from PPG awhile back but cant seem to get any answers from Infiniti.
I just bought an 06 recently and I have noticed the same problem. I couldn't figure out how it happened. I guess the paint sucks!!

It's just so damn depressing to see a $40k car have so many rock chips. I can't even begin to tell you how horrible my bumper and side body looks.

this is the last time i get a black car.

^^+1 My 01 Audi S4 was black as is my coupe and they both have the same amount of scratches and chips in the front bumper just dont drive within forty or fifty feet of the car ahead and avoid trucks at all costs see if that keeps your bumper in better shape

I have a laser red and have a ton on my hood and front bumper. My main concern with winter coming is will these rock chips turn into rust at all. Should I be going to the body shop to at least get it covered up so that no rust forms.

Thanks

It's amazing how this post is almost identical to the posts I read when the first 03 and 04 Coupes arrived. Some things never change, in this case, we can see that Infiniti has done nothing for paint issues.

Waterbased? U sure about that?

I had my front bumper repainted once already about a year ago....The original paint was soo badly pitted and chipped, it made my car look 10yrs older.

But, the new paint is no better IMO, I've already racked up my share of new chips.
