I like it and think you should go for it. I'll ask my brother-in-law about it next time I see him (runs a bodyshop).

weird

it all looks cheap and unfinished to me. Guess it's for a different crowd of people. Makes me think of the primered civics running around here with their neon lights under the car with ugly body kits barely hanging on the car.

I had a flat matte black hood on my old highschool car and had to maintain it with Mother back to black. Its was the only products that read while looking at, said it was use for flat black paint. Also it worked.

^ good call. that's what's used for matte black trims that turned white after you waxed your car.

he just adjusted the one I did lighter...which looks gray to me.

You need to select the car panels with magic wand or magnetic marquee, which ever works for you. Then in a new layer, lay down a layer of black.
Then in the original layer, duplicate it, then desaturate the layer thats on top of the other. Using the same selection you had of the black panels. adjust the contrast and exposure so it's dimmer. and use surface blur on this layer also.

Now go back to your black layer, turn the blending mode to overlay, and turn down the opacity to about 75% do less if you want it lighter.

that stuff makes the surface shiny again, which kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

it's not shinny...it just turns it back to the original color. like your trim by the mirror.
