New LED Brake Light Bulbs

I just found out the superlumination.com now sells 15 LED wedge matrix 7440 brake light bulbs. They are supposed to provide the illumination of standard incandescent bulbs. They actually have 9 LEDs firing out the back and 6 firing out the sides. The 9 LED versions were not bright enough. I just ordered two for the back brake lights so I'll let everyone know how well they work.

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

Do they have one for the Reverse Light?

I can't remember, but they actually might be the same bulb?

please post some pics when you get them, it would be great if you can take a pic after changing just one side. =)

Do they have some for the front brake lights?? 'Cause I could really use some better ones for the front.

I thought the rears were already l.e.d.,.. Or were you talking about the turn signals? 'cause l.e.d.'s for the turn signals would be cool.

Yes, I was talking about the rear turn signals which are 7440 bulbs.

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

so....any luck? do they blink too quickly now? perhaps you need to add a simple resistor from radio-shack??

Did you order the White or the Red 7440 LED Bulb.
Wonder which one we should use considering the taillight lense is already red?

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

It is generally recommended that you match the LED color to the lens color for maximum effective light output. Almost all of the light output from a red LED will pass through the red filter of the tail light lens, while a large part of the light output from a white LED will be filtered (absorbed) by the lens.

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

speaking from personal experience, white leds with red lens will make it look orange. Another thing is that it isn't as bright as the regular bulbs, hence during the day time it will be harder to see.. I got pulled over when I had these in my eclipse because the officer couldn't really see my brake lights, and these were 1157 bulbs with 24 leds

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

Had posted this on Fresh Alloy with the same topic but here's a cut a paste.
Here are some links to help you with your project. From what one of the posts say, I believe that you will need a 6 ohm, 50 watt resistor from the + LED cluster going to ground. 50 watt seems kind of big not sure how you are going to fit it.
The other problem is opening the tail light housing to put the LED cluster in it. It seems that it's glued together and kind of difficult to break it appart. Someone tried to place it in the oven to make it softer to no avail. Maybe you can drill some holes into the housing to place the cluster.
Read these posts and let me know if you are successful. I was also thinking of doing this mod but it maybe a little more difficult that it looks.

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

Tried to edit my previous post but did not work.
The link below is with a circular LED blinker mod, similar to the stop lights.

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

RugRatCoupe:
I ordered the new 15 LED matrix 7440 RED bulbs from Superlumination.com. While they are slightly dimmer than the original incandescent bulbs, they are much brighter than the 9 LED bulbs that I tried first. The new ones have 9 rear-facing LEDs and 6 side-firing LEDs which light up the housing better. I'm now ordering amber ones for the front turn signals. Are the front signal bulbs really the same as the rear turn signal bulbs (7440)? I couldn't understand how they could be since the front doubles as a parking light at lower intensity and the 7440 bulbs only have one filament. I'm also replacing all side marker lights with LEDs and making them all blink with the turn signals as well as the clearance light. I'll post pictures when I'm all done.

Let me know and thanks...

Re: New LED Brake Light Bulbs

When you say "slightly dimmer", can you be more specific? Did you do a L/R comparison with both bulb types flashing at the same time? Did you note the brightness at different positions - e.g. directly behind the car, slightly off-center, way off-center, etc.? Does the LED illuminate the same approximate surface area of the tail lens, or does it appear smaller?

I also assume you bought the red LEDs vs. white?
