Red 3M Double Sided tape ?!?!?!

Hi Guys,

My Inven Roof Spoiler (from Eric) came off and I am trying to put it back on.

I have been looking everywhere for the same tape that he used. I cannot find the thick kind anywhere . Autozone, Discount Auto Part, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and even Micheal's carry the red 3M double sided tape that is about 1/32" inch thick but I would need the one that is about 1/8" thick. The inside of the spoiler is recessed for that thickness and the 1/32" is not thick enough.

My online searches found some tape but it's about $63 a roll. WTF?!?!?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My car feels naked without the spoiler. Thanks

why would u want the thick one? I think it looks tacky seeing the grey 3m tape if it was that thick. THe regular 3m thin one holds it just fine.

The reason why I would need the thicker kind is because that's what the spoiler came with. Underneath the spoiler, where the tape goes, it's recessed with a 1/8" lip to hold the tape and hide it underneath the spoiler. Therefore a 1/32" thick tape would not even touch the back window to hold it in place.

Thanks

i trimmed the recessed lip to hold the tape on my spoiler and it looked much better. coz if you dont trim it the gap is horrible and the lip isnt even anyways. i just trimmed it out put some heavy duty double side tape and put some weight on it for a few minutes to stick and wala! 5x better!

I'm surprised that Home Depot or Lowes didn't have it. Maybe try a local hardware store. But if all else fails, why not just put a couple of layers of the stuff you have on to fill the gap?? It's not like it's bad to layer that tape really, it should stick to itself just fine.

Reverse: Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it.

Dranom: What did you use to trim the spoiler? Dremel? And did it make the spoiler less thick on your window?

05GRide: I even asked the clerks and went online and did not find it. No local hardware store around here (middle of nowhere). I think I might have to double up on the layers of tape but in my experience, it never works as well. I'll give it a try though.

I would IM Eric to find out where he gets his but seeing how he's very busy these days, I would probable be very low on his list to reply. :-(

Thanks guys.

haha I have the same exact issue! the Inven spoiler has too deep of a track. Home depots tape is too thin!!! I've looked at a few spots but nothing. I know Eric is real busy too sooo......dang.
Keep us updated on this. I'll let you know if I find anything. I hear hobby shops might have thick tape.

EnerOne,

I have been everywhere and can't find the stupid tape . Seeing that Eric isn't reponding on orders that make him money, I didn't even try to contact him regarding this. Even the 3M site doesn't even have it listed anywhere.

I kinda followed Dranom's advice and pretty much sanded down the tracks and bought the thickest tape I could find from Ace Hardware (white) which is still less thick than the 3M kind. Did it over the weekend. I'm going to put the spoiler back on the car soon. I'll let you know how that goes.

Why don't you double/triple up on the thin tape?

I tried that before on other projects and it never works as well. Something about the fact that the second layer sticking to the first layer instead of a direct surface makes it not bond as well. But that's just my experience and maybe others have had better luck.

Yo ollie, is your spoiler painted yet? Would you have to repaint it after sanding? Also what sand paper did you use? Some pics would be great Thanks.

Spoiler was already painted by Eric.

Didn't need to repaint. I just sanded the little recessed walls that are at the bottom of the spoiler (underneath and hidden). That part was not painted to begin with. I use for pretty rough sand paper cuz there was a lot of material to take out. Took a little while to get it all sanded down.

Here are a couple of pics of the spoiler installed. Looks like it's holding so far:

Hope this helps.
