Painted my OEM grill gloss black.
thanks for the advice. I dropped it off to get the grill and rear valence painted. Maybe u guys can clear something up. The two sets of wheels im looking at, GT-V and SF Winning come in a Matte or Satin black. Not exactly flat, but def not gloss. Thats the look im trying to get on the grill and valence. The guy at the shop, which is the best in town, said that u dont clear matte, flat, or satin. Its a single stage pant that u add a "duller" to which gives it the flat look. THe more u add, the less luster the paint has. He said that adding a clear 1. makes it look glossy and 2. eventually makes the paint look milky. So is it accurate that if u go with a matte look that u dont add a clear coat? Ive heard from other sources that u can get a matte clear for that type of paint job but this guy swore that isnt the case. Lemme know whats good.
Will be doing my grill very soon, and picked up 3 Krylon products
Grey Primer (black primer is available from another company, but wanted to use all products from the same manufacture)
Satin Black Paint
and 'Satin' Acrylic Crystal Clear
So, a satin clear is available, but I will have to wait until I do the grill to give an opinion on the product.
On a previous car(Elantra GT), I didn't use a clear coat and it looked fine(satin finish). I did have to do a quick respray every six months to hide rock chips.
I also thought that clear coat is to give paint luster - if you look in the engine compartment, that is the colour of the car before the clear coat. A dull version of the exterior colour. So, the only purpose of using a clear coat for a satin or matte finish would be for more durability? Wouldn't adding more light coats of paint do the same thing? I'm thinking that clear coating a satin or matte finish is unnecessary.
The 'guy at the shop' is probably correct, aside from the fact a satin clear coat is available.
