Question Protector Fillet/Stone Guard Question

Hi All, I have an 07 G35 that has major ugly cracks in the protector fillets/clear bras. I'm thinking about ordering some new ones and removing the old ones myself with a heat gun, but have a few questions:

What is underneath the cracked part? Is it just regular paint? Can it be damaged by taking off the clear bra/protector fillet? If I just took the old one off without replacing, wouldn't there be a weird looking dent where it was? Other models seem to have some sort of wedge that pops out and into the car, is that now how this model is, so more like a thick "film" that goes over the paintjob?

Ideally I'd like to paint those panels a different color (or order them in a different color?) to have cool accents on my car, but I'm a total noob at car stuff so I'm hoping you can help me with both sides. I found this old thread (https://g35driver.com/forums/interio...er-panels.html) but it didn't really answer my question and it's old so I posted both there and here. Hope that's ok.

Thanks!
