It's like if a car were parked on your chest and you were asking why is it so hard to breathe?
OR
If you were flicking ashes out the window and asked why you had these little burn marks on the weatherstripping?

My friend's '05 has the same exact problem, and he doesn't smoke, and never allowed anyone to smoke in his car.

At first glance of the picture i thought it was him posting this thread, the problem looked identical to his.

If it's really from heat (and not smoke), it should be pretty obvious with a brief look/feel around behind the console. If it's not from smoking, you really need to check it ASAP.

Well then, that's not good. Is it hot when you touch that area?

It's that, or:

you smoke and are lying.
someone who drives your car smokes.

or most plausibly: lay off the taco bell.
only have ESCORT Passport 8500 X50....

I don't smoke...

maybe eklectrical is burning behind that area. its strange, the width being the same as the cigarette tray area. suggest you pop the shifter housing and take a look behind it.
