Rattles, Creaking in G35 Sedan
Rattles, Creaking in G35 Sedan
My 2003 G35 Sedan has several rattles, or to me they are more like 'creaking' noises, like 2 plastic pieces tapping each other.
1) Front driver door
2) Front passenger door
3) Rear deck
4) Steering column
Both the doors sound EXACTLY alike. The noise happens just about anytime I got over any rough surface in the road, at just about any speed. It also happens when certain frequencies are played on the radio, and is noticeable even when the music in turned down quite low. The rear deck noise is intermittent, but sounds like loose wires of some sort rattling against a metal surface.
I have taken my G in to the dealer this week and they did the following.
"Tech checked doors for rattle, could not confirm. Inspected door panels, installed 2 extra rattle insulators as per TSB. Recommend customer drive as is."
After picking the car up, the rattles are still there, and no improvement at all. I can make the rattles in the doors stop by putting pressure on the window or door panel with my arm. I'm starting to get frustrated with paying for a "luxury" car that sounds like a bucket of bolts going down the road.
Has anyone had similar problems, and if so what did it take to get them fixed, specifically. I can live with the rear deck and steering column noises, as they don't happen very often. The doors, however, are constant and make me feel like I'm riding around in a cheap car.

I have the driver's door rattle that you are talking about. The tech rode with me today and I was able to duplicate a couple of times. I would say it happens most often when I am driving off a surface with a slope downward, i.e. a driveway, onto a flatter surface. Anyway, the tech took the door apart and has ordered some new mounting equipment for the window. I wonder if it will work. I am taking it back in next week for this to be reinstalled. I will let you know.

I also have a slew of interior rattles, squeaks, and groans that are simply compounded by the G35's stiff aluminium suspension and first-year production jitters.
But I don't think the G35 is a low-quality vehicle. I like to think of it as a diamond in the rough. Unfortuantely, it's not always easy to have that diamond polished at the dealer, especially when dealing with subjective matter, such as squeaks and rattles.
My suggestion: try to find the source of the sound and fix it yourself. Removing the door panels and applying some dynamat is not rocket science.
True, a luxury car shouldn't exhibit such a lack of refinement. But nothing in life is ever perfect. Sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands.
I will be starting Operation G-quiet soon and will gladly share my findings with everyone.

Spoke to the dealer today and Infiniti is very aware of the rattle issues. So aware that they have delayed releasing and pulled back some of the kits already out there, to modify it further. The same with the clock, apparently they are not satisfied with just replacing the bulbs.

Ok, I hope you read this because I have the solution to the door problem.
The rattle is coming from the interior panel tapping against the frame of the door.
To fix it, get some 1" foam tape (Home Depot) and put it where the plastic meets the metal.
To get into the door:
Look at the silver (wood) trim on the door. On the underside there is a small hole big enough for a screw driver. Place a screw driver in the hole and carefully pry the silver piece off. After the first pop, it will pull off in your hand.
Now, using your hand, pull the plastic interior away from the door starting at the bottom. It will come off rather easily. You really can''t break anything so give it a tug. It will not come all the way off, but just far enough to get your hand between the door and the interior panel.
Now, from underneath the door, look up into the door, you will see several points where the door and the interior panel come into contact with each other. Place the two sided tape on all of the contact points that seem likely to be the source of the rattle. Mine was right behind the area where my elbow sits.
I also had to fix the LR door as well. You may have to do this several times to get the right spot, but in the end you will have a much better driving experience.

Usually you can get a buddy to poke around back there while you drive and root out the problem.
That didn't sound too good did it?

Awesome, thanks for the advice Poindexter. I will give it a try this weekend and see if I can get the rattle out of the doors. I'll post an update when I'm done.
Re: Rattles, Creaking in G35 Sedan
I'm sure the rattles and creaks heard in some people's G35 don't compare to the squeeks and rattles heard on my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Love what's under the hood, can't stand the crappy, cheap, very American car like interior plastics. Then again, my aftermarket stereo kicks butt so I can drown out the noises.
Anyway, I'll be getting my G35 sometime late this year to early next spring. I figure I should be able to deal on a sedan much easier at that time. Continue the posts....I read most everything

Re: Rattles, Creaking in G35 Sedan
Husker, let me tell you, my mom had a Grand Cherokee and a good friend of mine has one. Both of those things squeak and rattle TONS more than my G35 does. It's not even the same ballpark. On the Jeeps, its sort of like trying to drownd out some of the rattles so you can hear the radio. On my G35, It's such a quiet smooth ride that even a tiny little rattle occasionally catches your ear.
Anyway, point is.. if you are worried about the G sounding like your Jeep.. it not even close.

Re: Rattles, Creaking in G35 Sedan
ncozby,
I'm not worried about (my soon to be G35) having the same annoying squeeks and rattles. I agree with you. I don't think any car can match the rattles and squeeks of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, model years 1993 - 1995 especially. Will miss the 4x4 capability in the snow though.
Can't wait to get my G35.
