Are the leds actually different than stock?
I looks like you took the plastic cover off and painted the surroundings or molded something over them. So far it looks the same and oem but without the side lights which someone aready stated that you need.

Show us how it turns out.

Wow thanks so far for all the encouragement. I'll try to answer some questions.
1.) You open up the taillights with a dremel (not for the faint of heart)
2.) All the Leds are from the stock housing, as a matter of fact I am attempting NOT to use any new electronics in the tailights but re-use and re-route.
3.) The taillights are actually comprised of 3 seperate plastic pieces. The outer skin (red acrylic) The inners led area which is all chrome and a red plastic rear container. I combine the first two and bond them after sanding off all the chrome and then drill additional holes for the new leds.
4.) The side markers are gone, you are correct but then again that also happens with overlays. Will I get popped? Probably not since Im in KY. Also look at the new GTR taillights (yes I know its proto) no hint of side markers. I did origionally think about adding the side markers but I thought it detracted from the design.
5.) They will be painted body color with a different shade in the recessed area

More to come... including my custom Nismo flares that are in the paint shop as we speak with my damaged bumper.

I've been working on the same type of thing, but keeping the side markers. The problem is that the led's you moved to the outer circle will look way dimmer, even though they are the same exact LED's. This is because they are not being magnified by the small reflective cones that the larger circle of lights has. I've been looking for brighter LED's to replace the outer ones, but have not found an exact match yet. I blacked out my housing since I had the cover off (the pics are from before I did this).

Great work man, can't wait to see em finished.

Updated shot

Here are some additional shots of my mod. Yes the buckets do add a substantial amount of reflectivity. Again, it is a work in progress and should be going to paint in a few weeks.

do the led's flash red or white. if they are red i dont see the difficulty in just making a clear lense to replicate the red lense
