Re: My blue security LED

PimpinPearl . . . . if you tried soldering 10 times, you may have heated up the LED and burned it out. LEDs don't like to be overheated. It also goes the other way for the resistors on the board and the board itself. If you can, try soldering on a lower temp.

Re: My blue security LED

I used a standard hole punch from craftsman, it came with a tool kit I bought years ago. It looks a thousand times better with the LED sticking through the hole. Without opening the hole more, the new LED has to sit behind the trim piece and most all the light is lost.
There are no scratchmarks or other visible signs that I opened the hole.
Radio Shack does not have a smaller blue LED listed, and I didnt see one when I went there. I cant get a good enough pic with my dig camera that close up or I would have posted it.
It does look very clean.

Re: My blue security LED

Found out that what I used is called a 'scratch awl', it looks like a hole punch with a screwdriver handle. Sears dosent list it on their web site, but the do have them.

I just slowly turned the awl in the hole till I could fit the new led through.

I also worked the awl by pushing it from the finished side of the trim in, it gives the hole a cleaner edge. Slow and steady, dont jam it in and F' up the hole.

Here is a pic of what one looks like, mind you Sears does not have a pic on their web site, but you'll get the idea.

Here is a picture of the trim piece and the clips' positions for easier removal.

Re: My blue security LED

I used a 3mm LED. It was a little small, I believe the factory is a 4mm, but I have never seen a place to buy a 4mm. I took a very thin piece of cardboard (the back of a radio shack component box) and painted it black. Then, I drilled a 7/64" hole in it and slid it on top of the LED. That way, when I put the cover back on the space around the LED was 'blacked out.' It looks great, but pictures will have to wait because I'm in Atlanta and my G is in Dayton. I'm flying home tomrrow though (friday). Btw, I bought my 3mm bright blue leds off of ebay a while ago. They guy was selling 25 of them for like $3 or something. He also had other bright colors. I don't remember his name, but he was in Taiwan. Hope this helps some people

Re: My blue security LED

One major differnce to keep in mind is if you hook an electrolitic cap up backwards it will explode. LEDs just won't work!!! But, it won't damage it at all
