Fog light turn on mod?
Fog light turn on mod?
I know this has been posted, it must have been, but for the life of me I couldn't find it when I searched, I tried but I guess I suck at searching.
Looking to have the fog lights on without the headlights. Just installed my 3k HID fogs and want to have them run without the headlights on, but maintain the use of the factory switch. Is there another way to wire this that I'm missing or should I wire a relay to the fog light power/ground and tap the city light for the switched relay position? I know that would work, just wondering if there's a more straightforward method.
Any input would be great

I'm not following, but the coffee hasn't started working yet. What do you mean?
After further review, there is an easy way to do this for anyone who's interested. Go to KPTech's page and buy his interface for $50 (http://www.kptechnologies.com/products.php#/12)
Otherwise it's a helluva lotta work to do this and maintain use of the factory switch. It's obviously possible, but damn sure isn't easy lol.
If you're curious, and have access to the factory service manuals, check out LT-98/99 (for an '05 coupe anyway, ymmv), and have fun figuring out how to interfere with the body control module and intelligent power distribution module.
Stupid Infiniti...

The BCM uses a complex 10 wire matrix style multiplex protocol. This is very similar to how computer keyboards work.
If you only want the fogs to come on with the key (ie on all the time) it is possible to hook up a single relay. You can do the same to have the fogs come on only with the parking lights (or even low beams). But, if you want to maintain use of the OEM switch and turn the fogs on independent of the headlights you will need a data decode module.

Yup. Just looking at the BCM diagram gave me a head ache and told me I was out of my league on this one. I did consider wiring them to turn on with the parking lights (tapping a relay off the city light, for instance) which would be simple enough, but then I noticed how painfully bright the HID fogs are, so I think that's a no go.
I'll be talking with you next week some time about the module lol

The diagram is in the service manual. It is an overly complicated system for what it is:
You have a turn signal stalk that the fog light switch is on. The stalk, as a whole, communicates with the BCM across a 5 input / 5 output matrix (similar to a keyboard). The BCM then communicates with the IPDM under the hood across the CAN bus. The BCM has logic programmed in to it that ultimately determines the status of the fog lights (on or off). The IPDM under the hood contains the fog light relay - the output of the relay is split across two wires - one for the left fog the other for the right fog. You can control the fog lights directly by interfacing with the output of the fog light relay under the hood - just make sure you use a fused source from the battery to make sure you have enough power to supply the lights. If you want to retain the use of the OEM switch but want to eliminate the interlocks you'll need the KPtechnologies MX20 module.
