"City Lights" are required in places like Japan, but not here in the states... In a way, they are like courtesy lights for when you are parked, turns on with the parking lights but not your headlights... these might be the same, they might be different (I would guess that they are supposed to be the same). But I wouldn't know, I don't have those headlights...

they are also on when you have your low beams on.

They should always be on except when you have your headlights off. They are even one with the foglights and also the highbeams. My 2003 sedan has them.

sorry to dig up an old thread, but after searching for answers im still confused

to summarize:
if I have an 04 coupe (see sig) and properly retrofit the 06 projectors, and:
1. I have the headlight switch set to AUTO and its a bright sunny day, so the headlights are off, will the City Lights be on?
2. if I now turn the headlights on, I assume the city lights will turn on?
3. if I turn the headlight switch to parking lights, will the city lights be on?
4. if I turn the headlight switch to off, will the city lights be on?

I have an '04 as well with the projectors and I can answer your questions.

1. No, city lights will not turn on when on AUTO on a bright sunny day.
2. Correct, city lights will turn on when headlights are on.
3. Yes, city lights will turn on. They serve the same purpose as the clearance strip in the '03-'05 headlights.
4. No, city lights will not be on when headlight swith if on the OFF position.

To summon it up, the city lights will ONLY turn on in the parking light position and when your headlights are on.

i would think you can re-wire your clearance strip lights (since 06 do not have clearance strips) to get power to the city lights.
