G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods

Had a rip in one of the boots on my old axle and asked my local mechanic how much to fix. Almost $400 with parts and labor so I called Infiniti to see how much a new one was. $900 for the axle alone and my "hook up" price which is usually pretty good was $500, (I am good friends with the parts manager). So my story goes like this:
Rebuild old part-$350
Buy a new axle-$500
Finding a used axle on eBay from an 06 sedan with 32,000 miles for $65 shipped and installing it myself-Priceless

Here's what the leak looked like after being wiped down a week ago. You can see the line that re-formed since then.

How did you know you had a rip? Was the crud visible externally or did it affect your handling/driving? Noise? Thanks in advance for the info (just something for me to keep in mind since I have an '06 Sedan past 50k miles now)!

And BlkSedan4me is right - it does look like a **** smear,
