Winter driving

Hoping you can help.
I love the G35, but need a car for all seasons. How does this car handle in the winter? Can you put winter tires on the 17' rims?
Any thoughts are appreciated!

Re: Winter driving

Need some more details to answer your question....
-where do you live
-what G35 are you looking at? there are essentially 4 different levels available as seasons are considered ... Sedan RWD, Sedan AWD, Coupe AT, Coupe 6MT

As for mine ... Coupe 6MT that comes with Michelin Pilot Sport (Performance Summer tires), it sucks bad in snow but it is fine in rain. I live in Chicago so I have a winter beater ... many have purchased 17" rims (which can fit over Brembo's) with A/S or snow tires for winter driving.

Re: Winter driving

I have a 6MT coupe and last year bought the Pirelli P210 snow tires mounted on some Mille Millia wheels--in 17" all around. Heck, the car was great in the Minneapolis snow. I sometimes got frustrated at the VDC when going through deep snow because I'm used to controlling a little bit of wheel spin, which is natural. I ended up turning off the VDC when going slow in deep snow but then back on again once I got rolling. Heck, I plower easily through unplowed 12" snowfalls.

Re: Winter driving

This is going to be my first winter in Chicago with my 6mt. I only drive about 5 blocks to work and am really torn on buying a winter set up. Anyone from the area have any thoughts? How bad (really) are the 18" Pilot Sports once the roads are plowed?

Thanks for any input.

Re: Winter driving

I've never driven in snow with the 18" wheels/tires because I bought a set of 17" snow wheels/tires right away. I was told by the dealer that the 18" wheels/tires has about as much traction on snow as a hocky puck. That convinced me that snow tires is essential for winter driving with the G even if your daily commute is short. My mom slid into a mailbox in our neighborhood on her way to work in her TL last winter, so no trip is too short when it comes to winter driving safety in my opinion.

Re: Winter driving

If they're streets you can go extremely slow down (just subdivision type ones) then I would keep the pilots through the winter and only drive to and from work. Although since subdivisions are last to get plowed you may end up using some vacation days or walking. Anymore than that though and I would either get a seperate set or just buy a junker. You can get one for as much as 4 winter tires are and can sell it in the spring. It also depends on what type of winter we have. I'm in the same dilema, but I'm either going to get rid of my 2k3 (get an old audi for this winter) and get a 2k5 next spring or get the winter setup... decisions decisions.

Re: Winter driving

no way on using the 18s. at the dealer lots, they can't even move the cars around the lots, they have to get a bunch of guys out there to push 'em.

from what I hear you'd be lucky to make it to the end of your street.

just bought mine on 10/25, will be ordering 17s with dunlop wintersport M3s next week to traverse any slick conditions here in Nebraska.
